Seattle's Points Problem

Seattle Sounders FC host Los Angeles FC at Lumen Field tonight with 43 points from 33 matches, 10th in the Western Conference. That is the number that frames the evening. With the season running down, a home fixture against a side the bookmakers price at a 26% chance of winning is the kind of game Seattle have to take three points from.

Brian Schmetzer runs the home side. Xavi Tamarit runs LAFC. Both have named confirmed XIs, and both have gone with a 4-2-3-1 — a double pivot behind a three-man line and a lone centre-forward. Neither coach has blinked. In a league where travel and rest often force a coach's hand, this is a night where both benches have chosen continuity over a curveball.

Seattle's key names are in the XI. Aaron Long anchors the back line. Albert Rusnák is in the attacking midfield band. Andrew Thomas starts. Armindo Sieb is named. Cristian Roldan is on the sheet. Those five carry the spine of the home side's structure, and their presence means Schmetzer has not had to patch a hole in the middle or at the back.

The Same Shape, the Same Risk

With both teams in a 4-2-3-1, the pressing triggers will be similar. The two No. 10s — Rusnák for Seattle, and whoever Tamarit has chosen in that band for LAFC — will be the first line of pressure on the opposing double pivot. If either side can break that first line, the centre-backs are exposed. That is the structural risk both coaches have accepted by naming the same shape.

Seattle's home form and Lumen Field's surface usually favour a team that wants to play on the front foot. The Sounders have the personnel to do it: Rusnák's passing between the lines, Roldan's late runs, Sieb's movement in the box. LAFC's counter is the obvious counterweight. The visitors will look to spring forward the moment Seattle's full-backs push high.

LAFC arrive as the outsider in the bookmakers' pricing, carrying a 26% implied probability of winning. That number is not a prediction, but it does frame the evening: the home side is expected to control the ball, and the away side is expected to sit in and counter. Tamarit's XI is unchanged in shape, which suggests he trusts his midfield to hold its structure without the ball and his front four to break at speed.

What to Watch

The first 15 minutes will tell you which team's pressing line holds higher. If Seattle's double pivot can turn LAFC over in the middle third, the home side will camp in the final third and the crowd will get involved. If LAFC's holding pair can play through the first press, the visitors will find the space behind Seattle's advancing full-backs.

Kick-off is next. The teams are confirmed, the shapes are set, and the Western Conference standings are the backdrop. Seattle need the points. LAFC have the chance to take them.
