DC United Go 4-4-2, NYCFC Counter With 4-3-3

DC United and New York City FC have confirmed their starting lineups for Saturday's Major League Soccer Round 34 match at Audi Field, and the shapes point to a clear contrast. René Weiler sends DC United out in a 4-4-2. Pascal Jansen sets NYCFC up in a 4-3-3.

The home side's two banks of four will look to keep the game in front of them and deny NYCFC's midfield three the half-spaces. The visitors' front three, meanwhile, will try to pin DC United's full-backs and force the home midfield to defend wide areas. That is the central tactical question of the afternoon: whether DC United's flat midfield can slide across quickly enough to protect the flanks without opening the centre, and whether NYCFC's front three can isolate the home full-backs in one-on-one situations.

Key Names in the XIs

Andre Dozzell starts for DC United. Brandon Servania is also in the XI. Both are listed among the key players for this match, and their inclusion gives Weiler's midfield a defined pairing in front of the back four. Dozzell's role will be to screen the space between the lines, while Servania's legs will be needed to cover the ground that a 4-4-2 demands against a three-man midfield.

For NYCFC, Hannes Wolf and James Sands are confirmed starters. Wolf's position in the front three will be one to watch against DC United's four-man midfield, while Sands anchors the middle of Jansen's 4-3-3. Jordan Farr is also in the confirmed lineups. Sands' positioning will determine whether NYCFC can dominate the ball in central areas or whether DC United's front two can cut off the supply into him.

What the Selections Imply

DC United's 4-4-2 asks the wide midfielders to track NYCFC's full-backs and prevents the visitors from overloading central areas without committing bodies forward. NYCFC's 4-3-3 gives Jansen a spare man in midfield, but it also leaves the away side's centre-backs exposed if DC United can turn possession over quickly and play direct into the front two.

The match is scheduled for 07.11.2026 at Audi Field in Washington, DC. Kick-off is set for the home stadium of DC United. New York City are the slight favourite in the odds bookmakers offered on this match, with a 42% win probability against 32% for DC United. DC United lost their last league match 0-3 away to Columbus Crew.
