Inter Miami CF closed their 2026 MLS regular season with a 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC at Nu Stadium on November 7, surrendering a three-goal half-time lead for the second time at home this year. Ian Fray put Miami ahead in the 14th minute, Luis Suárez doubled the advantage on 33 minutes, and Rodrigo De Paul made it three shortly before the break. Charlotte replied through Liel Abada in the 50th and 55th minutes, and Rodolfo Aloko equalised in the 90th after Tyger Smalls struck the post.

A collapse with precedent

The dropped points are not without precedent at Nu Stadium. On May 2, Miami also led 3-0 at home before Orlando City rallied to win 4-3. That earlier defeat and this draw share a shape: a commanding half-time position that dissolved after the interval. Charlotte's comeback began five minutes into the second half and was complete by the final minute of normal time.

Charlotte had an early goal disallowed for handball in the buildup, a decision that kept Miami's clean sheet intact until Abada's first strike. The visitors finished with five shots on target from 11 attempts, converting three of them. Miami also recorded five shots on target, from 15 attempts.

The numbers behind the scoreline

Miami's expected goals figure of 2.06 was higher than Charlotte's 1.73, and they enjoyed 60 per cent possession. Miami's open-play expected goals came to 0.62, while set-play expected goals reached 1.44. Their six corners in this match compare with an average of 2.4 across their earlier 2026 matches in all competitions.

Charlotte, meanwhile, created four big chances to Miami's three, despite seeing less of the ball. The visitors' ability to generate high-quality opportunities from limited possession proved decisive.

What it means for the table

Miami finish the regular season second in the Eastern Conference with 60 points from a record of 16 wins, six losses and 12 draws. The result confirmed their seeding but left questions about game management ahead of the postseason. Cristian González's side have now taken 1.75 points per game across eight league matches in 2026, a lower rate than the 2.18 points per game Gerardo Martino's team averaged over 34 games in 2024.

Lionel Messi was held scoreless and finished the season with 26 goals. He is poised to become the first player in MLS history to win back-to-back Golden Boots.

Miami's summer signings — Casemiro, Rodrigo De Paul, Germán Berterame, Sergio Reguilón, Riquelme Fillipi and Tadeo Allende — have reshaped the squad, while Ricardo Montenegro and Benjamín Cremaschi departed.

The pattern of conceding three goals after half-time, twice at home in a single season, is the kind of detail that opponents will study.
