This page explains what Measured Take collects when you read, comment on or contact us, why we collect it, who else receives it, and how to change your choices.

1. Who we are

Measured Take (measuredtake.com) is run by Peter Olaleru, who is responsible for how your data is used. Contact: peter@measuredtake.com.

2. What we collect

  • Reading articles. When you open an article, our own server records which article it was, how far you scroll, whether you stay 30 and 60 seconds, the page that sent you to us, your browser type, and a code made by scrambling your IP address and browser type together, which changes every day. This record does not store your IP address and uses no cookie. We also record when you use a share button. We use this to count readers and see which articles are read.
  • Server logs. Like most websites, our web server logs each request: your IP address, the page, the time, the page that sent you and your browser type. We use these logs to keep the site secure and working.
  • Analytics. Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, described under Cookies & analytics.
  • Newsletter. If you sign up, we store your email address, encrypted, and use it only to send you our newsletter.
  • Comments. Your comment and the name you choose (or “Anonymous”) are published under the article. We also store a scrambled form of your IP address to fight spam.
  • Correction reports. What you tell us through the error report form and, if you give it, your email address so we can reply.
  • Emails. If you email us, we keep your message and address so we can reply.
  • Settings on your device. Your light or dark theme, the edition you pick and your cookie choice are stored in your browser. They are not sent to us.

3. Why we are allowed to use it

  • Your consent for analytics cookies and the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time.
  • Our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving a news site for our own reader counts, server logs, comment spam protection, correction reports and emails.

4. Cookies & analytics

We use Google Analytics, through Google Tag Manager, to count visits and see which pages people read. We use Microsoft Clarity to see how people use our pages, including recordings of clicks, scrolling and mouse movement.

Until you choose “Accept all” on our cookie banner, these tools set no cookies and cannot link your visits together. If you choose “Reject”, it stays that way. If you accept, they set these cookies:

  • _ga, _ga_* (Google Analytics): recognize a returning browser; last up to 2 years.
  • _clck (Clarity): recognizes a returning browser; lasts up to 1 year. _clsk (Clarity): joins the pages of one visit; lasts 1 day.

5. Who else receives data

  • Google (Analytics and Tag Manager) and Microsoft (Clarity), as described above.
  • OVHcloud, which hosts our servers in the United Kingdom.
  • Resend, which delivers the emails we send.
  • Some pages show photos or embedded content from other sites, such as Wikimedia Commons or Getty Images. Your browser loads these directly, so those sites receive your IP address and may set their own cookies.

Google and Microsoft may process data outside your country. We do not sell your data.

6. How long we keep it

  • Server logs: 14 days.
  • Clarity recordings: 30 days (Microsoft keeps a small sample for up to 9 months).
  • Google Analytics: for the retention period set in our Google Analytics account.
  • Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe.
  • Comments: while the article is published, unless you ask us to remove yours.
  • Reader counts, correction reports and emails: as long as we need them to run the site and keep our corrections record.

7. Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent at any time. Email peter@measuredtake.com. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to your data protection authority; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

8. Changes

We update this page when what we collect changes. The date at the top shows the latest change.
