Liverpool have confirmed their starting XI for tonight's Champions League meeting with Villarreal at Anfield, and the shape is the one that has carried them through the opening two matchweeks: a 4-2-3-1, with the double pivot sitting behind a three and a lone centre-forward.

Villarreal answer with a 4-3-3. Three across midfield, three across the front line, and the width that comes with it. The two shapes do not mirror each other, and that is the first thing to watch once the ball moves.

What the shapes set up

Liverpool's 4-2-3-1 puts two holders in front of the back four and asks the attacking three to find the centre-forward between Villarreal's midfield and defensive lines. Against a 4-3-3, that central pocket is contested by three Villarreal midfielders rather than two, which means the Liverpool front four have to be precise with their positioning or the ball will keep circulating sideways.

Villarreal's 4-3-3 gives them a natural overload in the middle third. The single pivot at the base can drop between the centre-backs or stay high to press, and the two advanced midfielders can split wide to receive. If Liverpool's double pivot holds its position, Villarreal will look to the flanks; if it steps out, the space behind opens up.

The team sheets also put the night's individual matchups in plain view. Alberto Moleiro, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson Becker, Cody Gakpo and Georges Mikautadze are the names the two managers have built around, and each one sits at a different point on the pitch where the shapes will rub against each other.

The stakes at Anfield

Liverpool come into the match with six points from six in Europe. Villarreal have three. A win for the home side pushes them to nine and keeps them in control of the group; a Villarreal result drags the Spanish side level and turns the return fixture into a genuine swing game.

The Anfield crowd has seen this Liverpool side bounce back from a heavy home defeat already this season, and the two road wins that followed have restored the rhythm. Villarreal arrive on a run of their own, which is why the team news matters more than the badge on the door.

What the selections imply

With both XIs now locked in, the game plan for each side is legible. Liverpool will try to pin Villarreal's midfield three deep and attack the space between the lines with the attacking three. Villarreal will try to use their extra midfielder to circulate the ball, draw the double pivot out, and spring the front three into the channels.

The first 15 minutes should tell you which of those two plans is winning. If Liverpool's front four are receiving between the lines, the 4-2-3-1 is doing its job. If Villarreal's midfielders are turning under no pressure, the 4-3-3 is doing its job.

Kick-off is at Anfield. Both teams are confirmed. The group table is live from the first whistle.
