Roma lead Slovan Bratislava 2–0 at half-time at the Stadio Olimpico, and the scoreline is the least of the visitors' problems. Mario Hermoso headed in on 21 minutes, Nahuel Molina doubled the lead on 39, and the interval numbers describe a first half played almost entirely in one direction.
Roma have had 73% of the ball and 29 touches in the Slovan box to the visitors' four. They have out-shot Slovan 10–1, put four on target to none, and built a 1.44–0.02 expected-goals edge. Slovan's single attempt carried almost no threat; their goalkeeper has been the busier man by a distance.
Two Goals, Two Different Routes
Roma lined up in a 3-4-2-1, Slovan in a 4-1-4-1, and the shapes told the story of the opening half. Roma's back three stepped high and squeezed the pitch, the wing-backs pushed to the touchline, and the two attacking midfielders drifted between Slovan's lone holding midfielder and a back four that never escaped its own third. Slovan's single pivot was outnumbered from the first whistle.
The opener came from a set piece. Daniele Ghilardi delivered, Hermoso headed it in, and the chance was worth 0.65 xG on its own — more than Slovan would generate all half. It was the clearest illustration of where Roma's threat has come from: 0.65 of their 1.44 xG arrived from set plays, 0.80 from open play.
The second was the opposite. Donyell Malen assisted Molina on 39 minutes, a right-footed finish from open play worth 0.21 xG. By then Slovan had already been pinned back for the best part of 40 minutes, and the goal arrived as the logical next step rather than a surprise.
The Half in Numbers
Roma's passing has been the mechanism of the control: 302 accurate passes at 90%, 226 of them in Slovan's half. Slovan have completed 88 passes at 70% and just 38 in Roma's half. The visitors have won 25 duels to Roma's 26 — an even split that flatters them given how little of the ball they have seen — and picked up the half's only yellow card.
Lorenzo Pellegrini has been central to the buildup without yet converting his own chances, carrying 0.22 xG into the break. Wesley has been involved in the attacking rotations without a goal to show for it. Molina and Hermoso, the two scorers, have made the difference on the scoreboard; Ghilardi, with the assist on the opener, has made it from the flank.
Slovan's problem is structural rather than individual. A 4-1-4-1 with one screening midfielder cannot cover the space Roma's 3-4-2-1 creates between the lines, and the visitors have spent the half defending their own box rather than contesting midfield. Their one shot and 0.02 xG reflect a team that has not yet found a way to get out.
What the Second Half Needs
Roma's task is to manage the game without letting it drift. The two-goal cushion and the 1.44–0.02 chance-creation gap mean the result is firmly in their hands; the risk is complacency against a side that has offered almost nothing going forward. Slovan need a shape change — more bodies in midfield, a second holder, or a higher line — because the current setup has produced one shot and no touches of consequence in the box.
At half-time, Roma have the win, the control, and the chance quality. The only question left is whether they add to it.
