Sabah FK and Borussia Dortmund have confirmed their starting XIs for Tuesday's Champions League round-three meeting at the Bakı Olimpiya Stadionu, and the team sheets settle the shape question before a ball is kicked. Sabah set up in a 4-2-3-1. Dortmund answer with a 3-4-2-1.

That is the headline fact of the night in Baku: a side riding its first Champions League win names a front-facing four behind a lone striker, while the 1997 European champions arrive with a back three and two attacking midfielders tucked behind the centre-forward. The two shapes do not mirror each other, and the first 15 minutes will show which coach blinks.

Sabah's 4-2-3-1 and the men asked to make it work

Sabah's 4-2-3-1 puts the creative burden on the three behind the striker and asks the double pivot to screen a back four that will spend long spells defending the width of the box. Aden Mccarthy, Akim Zedadka and Du Queiroz are the names in the XI, and their positioning between the lines is the mechanism Sabah will lean on to break Dortmund's first press.

The 4-2-3-1 also dictates how Sabah defend transitions. With two holding midfielders, the full-backs can push higher, but that leaves the centre-backs exposed if Dortmund's front three attack early. Sabah's first Champions League win last week bought them belief; this shape is the test of whether that belief travels against a side with Dortmund's European pedigree.

Dortmund's 3-4-2-1 and the duel it creates

Dortmund's 3-4-2-1 stacks three centre-backs against Sabah's single striker and frees the wing-backs to push into the space behind Sabah's advanced full-backs. Carney Chukwuemeka and Daniel Svensson are in the XI, and their job in the two attacking-midfield slots is to find the pockets between Sabah's double pivot and back four — exactly the zone a 4-2-3-1 concedes if the holding pair are dragged wide.

The shape also means Dortmund can match Sabah's midfield four with their own four, then overload centrally with the two No. 10s. If Sabah's pivot holds its position, Dortmund's wing-backs get the ball in behind. If the pivot steps out, Chukwuemeka and Svensson receive between the lines. That is the trade Sabah have accepted by naming a 4-2-3-1 rather than a back five.

What the selections imply

Both XIs are confirmed and both coaches have committed to their shapes. Sabah's 4-2-3-1 is a statement that they will not sit deep at home on their first Champions League night in Baku. Dortmund's 3-4-2-1 is a statement that they will attack the space Sabah's full-backs leave.

The decisive detail is the central corridor. Sabah's two holders must cover the width between their full-backs and centre-backs while also tracking Dortmund's two No. 10s. Dortmund's three centre-backs must handle Sabah's lone striker without stepping into the space Mccarthy, Zedadka and Du Queiroz will occupy. Whichever unit holds its shape longer wins the tactical argument that the team sheets have already started.

Kick-off is at 12:45 PM local time in Baku. Sabah have their first Champions League win. Dortmund have their history. The shapes are on the board.
