Barcelona and Aston Villa have confirmed their starting XIs for tonight's Champions League matchday four fixture at Spotify Camp Nou. Fermín López starts for Barcelona. Aston Villa begin with Anthony Gordon, Boubacar Kamara and Emiliano Buendía in the side.

The Selection Calls

Fermín López's inclusion is the Barcelona decision to watch. He gives the attacking line a runner who arrives late in the box rather than a static creator, and his willingness to press sets the tone for how Barcelona will try to win the ball back high. Brian Fariñas also starts, adding another young option to the Barcelona XI.

For Aston Villa, Boubacar Kamara in the double pivot is the anchor of the plan. He screens the back four and frees the more advanced players to stay high. Anthony Gordon's direct running at the Barcelona right-back is one of the clearest routes into the game for the visitors. Emiliano Buendía offers a player who can find pockets between Barcelona's midfield and defence.

What Both Teams Have Picked

Both managers have gone with a 4-2-3-1. Barcelona's shape puts a double pivot behind a three-man line and a lone striker, designed to control the middle and allow the full-backs to push high. Aston Villa match that shape exactly, looking to stay compact in two banks of four when out of possession with the front four ready to break.

Because the shapes are identical, the match is less about system and more about execution. The game is likely to be decided by which set of full-backs handles the one-on-one duels better, and which double pivot holds its position when the other team turns the ball over.

Barcelona will expect to dominate possession at Camp Nou. Aston Villa will expect to counter. Kamara against Fermín López is the duel that could tilt the midfield. Gordon against Barcelona's right side is the duel that could produce the first goal.

The Wider Picture

This is matchday four of the Champions League stage, and the stakes are straightforward: three points at home would put Barcelona in a strong position to control their own path through the league phase, while Aston Villa arrive at Camp Nou knowing a result would reshape their own qualification prospects. Unai Emery has been here before, and his response to the inevitable questions about returning to this stadium was characteristically dry: "One more match. Just one more match." The line landed as both a deflection and a statement of intent.

Referee Davide Massa takes charge of the fixture. Kick-off is at Spotify Camp Nou.
