HALF TIME
0-0
Stamford Bridge

Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP walk off at Stamford Bridge level at 0-0, a first half of matched possession and mirrored shot counts that neither side could convert into a lead.

Shakhtar hold the ball with a 53-47 split and have edged the shot count 3-4 in Sporting's favour, but the more telling number sits underneath the scoreline. The hosts have generated 0.44 expected goals to Sporting's 0.23, and almost all of that advantage arrives from dead balls: 0.39 of Shakhtar's total comes from set plays against just 0.08 for the visitors. From open play, the picture inverts — Sporting have carved out 0.14 xG to Shakhtar's 0.05.

Set-Piece Threat Carries Shakhtar's Attack

Shakhtar's 4-1-4-1 has been built to press and recycle rather than break lines. With Yegor Nazaryna anchoring and Silas Andersen operating ahead of him, the hosts have kept 89% pass accuracy on 201 accurate passes, but only 87 of those have come in Sporting's half. The ball has moved well without moving dangerously, and the set-piece return is doing the heavy lifting: four corners to Sporting's one, and a single big chance that stands as the clearest opening of the half.

Sporting's 3-4-1-2 has been more direct in the final third despite seeing less of the ball. The visitors have completed 100 passes in Shakhtar's half to the hosts' 87, and their open-play xG of 0.14 reflects a willingness to attack the space behind Shakhtar's midfield line rather than circulate in front of it. Maxi Araújo has been the outlet, carrying 0.05 xG of his own, while Kauã Elias has registered 0.28 xG — the largest single share of any player on the pitch and the reason Sporting will feel they have the more repeatable route to goal.

Duels and Discipline Keep It Level

Shakhtar have won the physical battle, taking 30 duels to Sporting's 24, and their four fouls to Sporting's nine suggest a side controlling contact rather than chasing it. No yellow cards have been shown. Both goalkeepers have been beaten once on target apiece — one save each from three and four shots respectively — and the 13-11 touch count in the box is close enough to call the penalty-area contest a wash.

Fotis Ioannidis has been the focal point for Sporting without yet registering an xG figure of note, while Nazaryna's control in front of Shakhtar's back four has kept the hosts' shape intact through Sporting's better open-play spells. The half-time question is straightforward: Shakhtar need their set-piece edge to keep producing, because their open-play creation has not. Sporting need Elias and Araújo to keep finding the gaps between the lines, because that is where the game's only sustained threat has come from.
