Carlos Romero v Achraf Hakimi
Achraf Hakimi led on chances created: 3 to 0.
Paris Saint-Germain scored four goals in eight first-half minutes and finished with six, beating Villarreal 6-0 at the Estadio de la Cerámica in the Champions League. João Neves, Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz had the tie effectively settled by the 17th minute. Ruiz added a second from a set piece five minutes after the restart, and David Boly completed the scoring in the 78th.
The scoreline and the chance data tell the same story. PSG finished with 2.69 expected goals to Villarreal's 0.66, 22 shots to 14, and 12 on target to two. They had 43 touches in the Villarreal box against 10, and four big chances against none. Possession ran 71-29. Villarreal's 14 shots were not nothing, but only two asked a question of the goalkeeper, and none of them arrived with the game still live.
Four goals in eight minutes
Villarreal set up in a 4-4-2 and PSG in a 4-3-3, and the shape did not survive the first quarter of an hour. Neves opened it in the ninth minute from a corner, meeting Willian Pacho's delivery with his right foot from a chance worth 0.45 xG. Three minutes later Doué made it two from open play, right-footed, set up by Maghnes Akliouche. A minute after that Mayulu scored with his left from Neves' assist. In the 17th, Ruiz finished left-footed from another Akliouche pass.
Four goals, four different scorers, two assists for Akliouche inside five minutes. Villarreal had not been carved open by sustained possession so much as punished on nearly every entry into the box. By the time the first half ended, PSG had 15 shots to Villarreal's four, eight on target to one, and 27 box touches to five. The xG at the break was 1.72 to 0.17.
Expected goals (xG) by half
Paris Saint-Germain's xG went from 1.72 in the first half to 0.97 in the second.
Figures in xG
Set pieces and the second wave
Ruiz's second, in the 50th minute, came from a set piece and carried the highest single chance value of the night at 0.54 xG. Vítinha supplied it. That goal mattered for the shape of the numbers as much as the score: PSG's set-piece xG finished at 1.26 against Villarreal's 0.06, and more than half of it arrived on that one left-footed finish.
Villarreal did improve after the break. They took 33 percent of second-half possession, out-shot PSG 10-7 in the period, and generated 0.49 xG to PSG's 0.97. The open-play split in the second half actually favoured the home side, 0.48 to 0.25. It changed nothing about the result, because the game had been decided before the interval, and because Villarreal's second-half shot count produced one effort on target.
Match stats
Paris Saint-Germain created the better chances: 2.69 xG to 0.66.
Boly closes it, and the numbers behind the rout
Boly made it six in the 78th, right-footed from the right of the box, with Neves providing his second assist of the match. Neves finished with a goal and two assists; Ruiz with two goals from 0.84 xG; Doué with a goal from 0.29; Mayulu with a goal from 0.20. Akliouche did not score but recorded two assists and 0.11 xG of his own.
The disciplinary ledger ran the other way. Villarreal committed 19 fouls to PSG's four and collected four yellow cards to one, a reflection of a night spent chasing the ball rather than winning it. PSG won 44 duels to 31 and completed 677 passes at 91 percent accuracy, 266 of them in Villarreal's half. Villarreal completed 237 at 78 percent, 90 in PSG's half.
The margin of six against an xG margin of roughly two is the detail worth keeping. PSG scored from a corner, from open play three times in five minutes, from a set piece, and once more late. They did not need a hot goalkeeper or a deflection to get there. Villarreal's 14 shots and 0.66 xG describe a team that kept trying; their two shots on target describe a team that never made the tie competitive after the 17th minute.
