Paderborn have handed a first Bundesliga start to Gabriel Vidović for the visit of Eintracht Frankfurt, with Ralf Kettemann naming the forward in a 3-3-2-2 at the Home Deluxe Arena. Adolf Hütter's Frankfurt line up in a 4-2-3-1, with Ansgar Knauff restored to the starting XI.
The teamsheet is the story of the afternoon. Paderborn, two points clear of the bottom three, have chosen a shape that asks their wing-backs to cover the full width of the pitch and their two attacking midfielders to play narrow. Frankfurt, prolific but inconsistent, have matched that with a back four and a double pivot, leaving Can Uzun, Farès Chaïbi and Elias Baum to supply the width and the final pass.
Paderborn's 3-3-2-2: Width Without the Ball, Narrow With It
Kettemann's 3-3-2-2 is a shape that lives on the transition. The back three holds its line, the midfield three screens the space in front, and the two attacking midfielders tuck inside to make the pitch small when Paderborn lose the ball. When they win it, the same two players are expected to break into the channels either side of the Frankfurt pivot.
Vidović's inclusion suggests Paderborn want a runner in behind rather than a target man. The 3-3-2-2 leaves the centre-backs to defend one-on-one, and Frankfurt's front four will test that directly. If Paderborn's wing-backs are pinned back, the two attacking midfielders will have to carry the ball 40 metres on their own.
Frankfurt's 4-2-3-1: Knauff Back, Uzun Central
Hütter has gone with the 4-2-3-1 that gives Frankfurt a spare man in midfield and three creators behind the striker. Knauff's return is the headline selection: his direct running from the right is Frankfurt's most reliable route into the box when the central lanes are crowded.
Uzun, Chaïbi and Baum are the other names to watch. Uzun drifts between the lines, Chaïbi looks for the half-space on the left, and Baum provides the overlap. Against a back three, that trio will try to pull the wide centre-backs out of position and leave the central defender exposed.
What the Selections Say About the Table
Paderborn's two-point cushion over the bottom three is the context for every decision Kettemann makes. A back three at home against a top-half side is a calculated risk: it protects the centre but concedes territory. Frankfurt, meanwhile, have the players to punish any hesitation. Knauff, Uzun, Chaïbi and Baum all start, and all four are comfortable running at defenders.
The match will be decided by whether Paderborn's narrow midfield can stop Frankfurt's creators from turning. If they can, Vidović's pace becomes the outlet. If they cannot, Frankfurt's front four will find the space behind the wing-backs. Kick-off is at 2:30 PM UTC.
