Arsenal are back at the Emirates Stadium for their 10th Premier League match of the campaign, and William Saliba is finally close to playing again. The defender has not featured at all this season. His return would settle the one area where Mikel Arteta's side have had to improvise.
Hull City arrive for their milestone 200th Premier League game without a win since late August. Arsenal are chasing a fifth straight league win. The gap in form is the backdrop. The team sheets confirm the shape of the problem Hull will try to solve.
Hull's Five-Man Back Line and the Space It Leaves
Sergej Jakirović has picked a 5-3-2: five across the back, three midfielders screening, two up top. Against Arsenal's 4-2-3-1, that creates a specific squeeze. The back five can match Arsenal's front four plus a spare, while the three midfielders screen the pockets where Declan Rice and his partner would normally receive. The two Hull forwards stay high, which means Arsenal's centre-backs have a decision every time they step in.
The onus falls on Arsenal's full-backs to advance and on the wide attackers to pin the wing-backs. If Hull's front two do not track back, Arsenal can build with a spare man at the base. If they do, the home side must go longer or wider earlier than they would like. Jakirović has picked a shape designed to make Arsenal's first pass uncomfortable.
Saliba's Return and What It Changes
A 4-2-3-1 with Saliba at centre-back allows the defensive line to push higher, which in turn compresses the space Hull's front two want to run into. Without him, that line drops, and the 5-3-2 becomes more comfortable. Arteta also has a decision alongside Saliba. The manager said of one player's fitness: "Yeah, he's fine. He was feeling much better today. We took him out for a precaution but yesterday and today he's feeling good." That is the only confirmed fitness update from the camp, and it points to at least one selection call going to the wire.
The Midfield Screen and the Men Who Must Break It
Declan Rice starts in the Arsenal midfield. His job against a 5-3-2 is to receive between the lines and turn, because Hull's three midfielders will try to deny that turn. Bruno Guimarães is listed among the key players, and his ability to progress the ball through a screen is the mechanism that decides whether Arsenal's possession becomes chances or just passes.
For Hull, Christos Tzolis carries the counterattacking threat. In a 5-3-2, the two forwards need one of the midfield three to break at speed. Tzolis is that runner. If Arsenal's full-backs are high and Rice is ahead of the ball, Hull have a direct route. David Raya's positioning and his willingness to sweep behind a high line will be tested more than the possession count suggests.
Elliot Stroud is the other name to watch in the Hull setup. In a five-man defence, the wide centre-backs must defend the channel and still step out to meet Arsenal's wide players. Stroud's duel with Arsenal's right side is the one that decides whether the 5-3-2 holds its shape or gets pulled apart.
Kick-off at the Emirates is next. The team sheets are in, the shapes are set, and the first 15 minutes will show whether Hull's five-man back line can make Arsenal's 4-2-3-1 play around them rather than through them.
