Napoli have named the XI that carries their season's expectation. Frank Anguissa, Amir Rrahmani and Cyril Ngonge all start at the U-Power Stadium, and the selection leaves Antonio Conte's side with few places to hide against a Monza team sitting 15th.
The teamsheet is the story of the night. Napoli arrive with 11 points from their opening eight Serie A fixtures, a return that has them mid-table and under pressure to improve, particularly away from home. Monza have seven points and a 3-4-2-1 shape that Ivan Juric has settled on, a look built to crowd the middle and spring forward through the two players behind the striker.
Napoli's Shape and the Men Tasked With Breaking the Block
Napoli line up in a 4-3-3. Anguissa anchors the middle three, and his job is to win the ball back and carry it through the first line of Monza pressure. Rrahmani starts in the back four, the most experienced voice in a defence that has to stay switched on against a side that will sit deep and counter.
Ngonge starts in the front three. Against a 3-4-2-1 that defends with five across the back and four in midfield, the wide forwards have to stretch the pitch and force the Monza wing-backs into decisions. Ngonge's direct running is the clearest route to turning possession into chances.
Monza's shape asks a lot of their two attacking midfielders. They have to press Napoli's deep midfield without leaving the striker isolated, and they have to track Anguissa when he breaks forward. That is the central contest of the first half.
Monza's Young Names and the Home Test
Adam Bakoune and Foe Ondoa both start for Monza. For a newly promoted side with seven points from eight games, the selection is a statement about development as much as survival. Bakoune and Ondoa will see plenty of the ball in the middle third if Monza can make the game scrappy, and their ability to keep possession under Napoli's press will decide how often the home side can relieve pressure.
Monza's last outing was a 3-2 defeat to Torino, a result that left them 15th. Napoli's away form is the other half of the picture: a side with 11 points and a squad expected to challenge at the top cannot afford to drop points at a ground like this.
What the Selections Say About the Night
Napoli have gone with their strongest available XI. No rotation, no experiment in the spine. Anguissa, Rrahmani and Ngonge starting together signals that Conte wants control from the first whistle and does not want this to become a scrap.
Monza have gone with youth in Bakoune and Ondoa alongside a shape that asks them to be disciplined for 90 minutes. The home side's best hope is that Napoli's away form holds and the game stays level into the second half, when the U-Power Stadium can turn a mid-table night into something heavier.
Kick-off is at the U-Power Stadium in Monza. Napoli need the points to climb; Monza need them to breathe.
