Genoa host Juventus at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on Wednesday evening, and the team sheets put Alessandro Marcandalli and Amorim at the centre of the home side's plans while Andrea Cambiaso, Douglas Luiz and Federico Gatti start for the visitors.

Both managers have named a 3-5-2: three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards. Kick-off is 7:45pm BST in Serie A.

Genoa's Platform

Genoa's 3-5-2 gives them three centre-backs, a five-man midfield and a front two. Marcandalli and Amorim are the players the home side will lean on to make that structure work at both ends — defending the central lane and turning possession into pressure around the Juventus box.

With five players across the middle, the central corridor is congested by design. The space that opens will be on the flanks and in behind the opposing wing-backs, which puts the emphasis on Genoa's wide midfielders to deliver early and often.

Juventus Set the Block

Juventus arrive as the away side and are set up to defend in a block, with Genoa the attacking team. In a 3-5-2 that block still leaves five across midfield, so Genoa's route through the middle will be squeezed rather than open.

The mechanics are straightforward: three centre-backs hold the central zone, the five midfielders screen the space in front of them, and the two forwards stay high as the out-ball. Genoa's front two will have to work across the Juventus back three to find any separation.

Cambiaso and Douglas Luiz give Juventus legs and control in the five, while Gatti anchors the back three. That is a shape built to absorb pressure and counter.

What the Selections Imply

With both teams in the same shape, the match becomes a test of who can turn five midfielders into an overload and who can turn three centre-backs into a clean sheet. Genoa have the home crowd at the Luigi Ferraris. Juventus have the away block and the counter.

The line-ups are in, the shapes are set, and the first question is whether either side can find a way through a mirror.
