Soccer field — Fenerbahçe's Five-Match Run Meets Slavia Prague's Road Test in Champions League Round 3

Fenerbahçe and Slavia Prague played out a 2-2 draw at the Chobani Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi on Tuesday, a Champions League league-phase night that promised a home rout inside 11 minutes and delivered a late Czech sucker punch instead.

Oğuz Aydın scored after four minutes and Mason Greenwood doubled the lead on 11, but Lukáš Provod pulled one back on 15 and Pavel Kačor levelled in the 90th. Fenerbahçe's 2-0 head start, built on 1.04 expected goals across the match, was undone by a Slavia side that finished with 1.48 xG and the two biggest chances of the night.

Two goals in 11 minutes, then the game turned

Fenerbahçe lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and Slavia in a 3-4-2-1, and the early exchanges belonged entirely to the home side. Aydın's fourth-minute opener came from a Milan Škriniar assist, a low-value finish at 0.08 xG that nonetheless set the tone. Seven minutes later Greenwood made it 2-0, finishing right-footed from a Nélson Semedo assist on a chance worth 0.11 xG.

At that point the match looked settled. Fenerbahçe had 52% of first-half possession, nine shots to Slavia's six, and 13 box touches to 11. But the away side's response was immediate and efficient. Provod struck on 15 minutes, unassisted, from a chance rated 0.36 xG — the highest-quality opportunity of the first half and a warning the hosts did not heed.

By the break Fenerbahçe's shot count led 9-6, but Slavia's 0.56 first-half xG edged the hosts' 0.39. The scoreboard read 2-1; the underlying numbers already read level.

Slavia Prague created the better chances: 1.48 xG to 1.04.

Slavia take over after the break

The second half flipped the territorial picture. Slavia claimed 54% of possession after the interval and out-shot Fenerbahçe 9-6, putting three on target to the hosts' one. The away side's second-half xG of 0.92 dwarfed Fenerbahçe's 0.65, and the big-chance count finished 2-1 in Slavia's favour across the 90.

Fenerbahçe's grip on the game loosened further as the half wore on. They committed 12 fouls to Slavia's 15 across the match and picked up three yellow cards to the visitors' one, a sign of a side increasingly forced into recovery mode rather than control. The hosts won the duel count comfortably, 61-41, but duels won without territory and without chances is a statistic that flatters a team going backwards.

Expected goals (xG) by half

Slavia Prague's xG went from 0.56 in the first half to 0.92 in the second.

Full-time numbers landed almost dead level: shots 15-15, shots on target 4-4, box touches 28-26, accurate passes 342 (83%) to 354 (83%). The one column that separated them was xG, and it pointed away from the home dressing room.

Provod's night and Kačor's moment

Provod was the individual story of the match. His goal came from 0.45 xG, the single largest expected-goals contribution by any player on the pitch, and he carried Slavia's attacking threat through the periods when Fenerbahçe still believed they controlled the game. Greenwood's goal, by contrast, came from 0.11 xG — a fine finish from a half-chance rather than a sustained attacking pattern.

Fenerbahçe's other attacking contributors were quieter than the scoreline suggested. Mubarak Suleiman registered 0.06 xG without a goal. David Moses did not register an xG value at all. Aydın's opener, at 0.08 xG, was the kind of goal that arrives from a defensive lapse rather than a carved-out opening, and once Slavia tightened up after the 15th minute, those gaps closed.

Set plays were a non-factor for both sides: 0.15 xG for Fenerbahçe, 0.14 for Slavia, with corners finishing 5-3 to the visitors. This was decided in open play, where Slavia's 1.34 xG beat Fenerbahçe's 0.90.

The decisive moment arrived on 90 minutes. Kačor finished right-footed from an Emmanuel Ayaosi assist on a chance rated 0.42 xG — the second-biggest opportunity of the entire match and the one that mattered most. Fenerbahçe had led for 75 of the 90 minutes and finished with a point.

For a side that came into the night seeking to rebuild momentum after a painful European setback, a 2-0 lead surrendered at home is not a rebuild. It is a repeat of the problem. Slavia, who arrived in Istanbul without a win in this league phase, leave with the more convincing performance and the more painful lesson delivered to their hosts.
