Coventry City and Sunderland have confirmed their starting lineups for Saturday afternoon's Premier League fixture at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and both managers have landed on the same shape: a 4-2-3-1 apiece.

The headline selection comes from the Coventry bench, where Frank Lampard has made a significant call on Matt Grimes. The Coventry Telegraph reported the decision as a "big" one, and it lands in a match Coventry enter looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Coventry's Midfield Gamble

Lampard's 4-2-3-1 asks the double pivot to screen a back four against a Sunderland side that will press in the same structure. Removing Grimes from the starting equation changes the rhythm of Coventry's build-up: the first line of progression now runs through different feet, and the spacing between the pivot and the attacking line has to be re-established on the fly.

Lampard has been explicit about the adjustment his squad faces at this level. "We can train, we can work, but, when you come up against good opposition, they make it very difficult for you," he said. That message frames the Grimes call less as a rotation and more as a test of whether Coventry can cope with a Premier League press without their usual midfield anchor.

Sunderland arrive with their own 4-2-3-1, which sets up a mirror image across the pitch. When both teams line up this way, the game is often decided in the half-spaces and in who wins the second ball after the first press is broken. Coventry's reshuffled pivot will be the first place Sunderland look.

The Names to Watch

Brian Brobbey leads the Sunderland attacking line and is the most direct threat to Coventry's back four. Enzo Le Fée operates in the attacking midfield band behind him, and Chris Rigg gives Sunderland a second runner from deep. Caleb Yirenkyi is the other outfield name to track in the Sunderland setup.

At the other end, Carl Rushworth starts in goal for Coventry, and his distribution under pressure will shape how often Lampard's side can bypass the first line of Sunderland's press rather than play through it.

What Is at Stake

This is a fixture with recent history. The two clubs met in the 2025 playoff semifinal, and the rivalry carries into a Premier League afternoon at the CBS Arena. Coventry are chasing a return to winning ways; Sunderland are the visitors tasked with making that difficult.

Both teams have committed to the same 4-2-3-1, so the match is unlikely to be decided by structural surprise. It will be decided by which midfield pair holds its shape when the press arrives, and by whether Coventry's adjusted setup can find Brobbey's markers before Sunderland's runners get behind them.

Kick-off is at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
