Grimaldo Punishes Levante's Only Real Lapse

Alejandro Grimaldo's 36th-minute goal is the difference at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia, where Atlético Madrid lead Levante 1-0 at half-time. The left-footed finish carried just 0.11 xG, but it arrived at the moment Levante had begun to look the more likely side to score.

Atlético's 4-4-2 has controlled the ball without controlling the danger. Diego Simeone's side have seen 65% of possession and completed 303 passes at 90% accuracy, but their five first-half shots have generated only 0.22 xG. Grimaldo's goal is the exception to a half in which Atlético's territorial dominance has not translated into clear chances.

Match stats at half-time

Levante created the better chances: 0.56 xG to 0.22.

Levante's 4-3-3 Creates the Better Volume

Levante have had 35% of the ball but lead the expected-goals count 0.56 to 0.22. Their six shots and two on target match Atlético's output, and the open-play xG split — 0.56 to 0.21 — shows Julián Calero's side have created the better chances from open play. Both teams have managed 10 touches in the box and one big chance apiece, but Levante's shot quality has been higher.

Etta Eyong has been the focal point of that threat, accumulating 0.38 xG on his own — more than Atlético's entire first-half total. Álex Baena has been quieter at 0.01 xG, while Marcos Llorente's 0.02 xG reflects Atlético's difficulty turning possession into penetration. Jeremy Toljan's contribution has come without a registered xG value, but his involvement in Levante's attacking structure has been part of the pattern that has kept the hosts competitive.

What the Second Half Needs

Atlético's 153 passes in Levante's half against Levante's 66 tells the story of control without cutting edge. The visitors have matched Levante for duels won (21-21) and corners (1-1), and neither side has picked up a yellow card. But the scoreline and the xG map are telling different stories: Atlético lead where it counts, while Levante have created the better chances.

For Levante, the task is to convert volume into a goal. For Atlético, the question is whether 0.22 xG is enough to protect a one-goal lead if Levante's finishing improves. Grimaldo's goal remains the only thing separating the sides — and on the balance of chance creation, it is a slender one.
