Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 142 Ukrainian drones overnight on November 8, 2026, across Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Tula, Oryol, Voronezh and Rostov regions, as well as the Moscow region, Crimea and the Sea of Azov. In Rostov Region, falling debris damaged a bridge over the Mius River and two crawler cranes. No injuries were reported.

Ukraine reported shooting down or jamming 196 Russian drones, with impacts and fallen debris recorded at 22 locations across the country. The two figures are claims by each side's military, not independently verified counts.

The exchange follows a November 6–7 Russian strike campaign in which Ukraine's president said 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones targeted 13 oblasts, primarily Kyiv City and energy infrastructure. Substations were damaged, including one connecting the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants with Kyiv City and central Ukraine.

Russian forces also struck a power generation facility in Ukraine — identified in one source as a major power plant in Biloshitsy, Zhytomyr region — and a container ship in the Black Sea, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The full extent of damage at Biloshitsy, the number of people left without power, and the outcome of the container ship strike are not yet known.

On November 6, Russia and Ukraine launched overnight drone attacks against each other's industrial sites and energy infrastructure. Authorities in the southern Krasnodar region said drone debris fell onto an unidentified industrial facility in the town of Afipsky and sparked a fire. The Afipsky oil refinery was identified as a target.

The reciprocity is the point. Russia claims to have downed 142 Ukrainian drones while simultaneously striking Ukrainian power generation. Ukraine reports jamming or downing 196 Russian drones while itself targeting Russian industrial sites. Both sides are now prioritizing energy infrastructure — the systems that power cities, industry and military logistics — as a target set.

What the 142 and 196 figures do not show is how many drones reached their targets, what those targets were, or whether this represents a sustained escalation or a one-night spike. Officials have not said whether the container ship was military or civilian, or whether there were casualties.

The aerial dimension of the war is intensifying even as diplomatic talks are planned. Civilian infrastructure remains at risk.
