TL;DR
At about 3 p.m. on Saturday 7 November, a man drove onto the Main Market Square in Kraków, Poland, and fired at people from his car. Police say six people were killed and about 15 wounded, among them police officers. Officers chased him through the Old Town and stopped him at the junction of Stradomska and Dietla streets, where he was shot and arrested. Weapons and ammunition were found in his car. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said three more people were found dead at the suspect's home. No motive has been confirmed, and no charges had been reported at the time of writing.
What happened on the square
Kraków police said the man drove onto Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square, and fired at people from the car. RMF24, citing Małopolska police, reports that he entered the square from Sławkowska Street. Police said four women and two men were killed. The Małopolska regional government raised the toll from five to six during the day.
At least 15 people were wounded; some outlets count 16, which includes the suspect. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said police officers were among the injured, two of them hit by gunfire and one in serious condition. Police denied rumours that an officer had died and that a second attacker was being sought. They said the suspect acted alone.
The chase and the arrest
According to RMF24, the suspect kept driving through the Old Town along Grodzka Street, Wszystkich Świętych Square and Marii Magdaleny Square, then along Stradomska Street to Dietla. There the chase ended. RMF24 and CBS News report that officers shot him at the junction and arrested him, and that he was taken to hospital. Police said he was undergoing surgery.
Police told RMF24 that many weapons and a large amount of ammunition were found in his car. Kraków city hall said a tram on line 1 was also hit by gunfire; the motorman's cab window was broken and nobody was hurt.
Three more dead at a home
Tusk said three more people, two women and a man believed to be relatives of the suspect, were found dead at his home, in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances.
What officials say about him
Kierwiński said the suspect is a Polish citizen. He said that "everything indicates" the man was fascinated by far-right ideologies, and described his views as very radical and ultranationalistic. That is the minister's assessment, not a finding of a court. Police have not confirmed a motive, and investigators are still working to establish one.
Reports differ on the suspect's age: some outlets give 24 and others 25. We have not used his name, which police have not released in full.
What is not yet known
- Motive. No confirmed motive; the interior minister's description of his views is not a stated reason.
- Charges. None had been reported when this was written.
- Final figures. Casualty counts have already changed once and may change again as the wounded are treated.
How we made the map
The map animation in our video traces the route police reported, using street data from OpenStreetMap. It is an illustration of the reported route, not a reconstruction of each moment. The narration is AI-generated. The video also uses a bystander clip of people running and a photograph of the arrest from TVN24, neither of which has been cleared with its owner.
Mourning
Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared a period of official mourning in the city until Wednesday 11 November.
