Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on 6 October that Sweden will take over air-defence duties at Poland's Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub from the Netherlands. The mission is scheduled to begin on 1 December and run for seven months, with around 100 Swedish personnel accompanying Patriot air-defence systems.

The Swedish regiment's assignment is to defend the hub against aerial threats including drones and rockets. That is the stated purpose of the deployment: protecting a facility, not transferring or selling weapons.

The significance lies less in the hardware than in what the hardware guards. Rzeszów-Jasionka is a key transit point for aid to Ukraine. Swedish authorities say about 18,000 tonnes of equipment pass through the airport in eastern Poland each month. Protecting it is a practical part of securing the support network that sustains Ukraine's military and civilian needs.

The handover also places Sweden in a visible NATO eastern-flank defence role. Sweden is not adding a new capability to the alliance so much as maintaining one at a site where continuity matters.

Several details remain unspecified. The announcement does not say how many Patriot batteries or individual systems Sweden will send, what the full contingent will include, how the mission will coordinate with Polish forces and other NATO air-defence assets, or what arrangement will follow when it ends. Those are open questions, not settled facts.

What is clear is the schedule and the scale: a 1 December start, seven months, roughly 100 personnel, and a facility through which a substantial share of aid to Ukraine passes. The deployment is best understood as a handover of protection for a critical transit hub, not simply a new weapons announcement.
