Smoke billows from the cooling towers of a power plant, for a story on Trump's energy cease-fire announcement.

President Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday, October 11, 2026, that Russia and Ukraine had reached an "ENERGY CEASEFIRE" in their war, "effective immediately." He wrote that "both parties have agreed" and added a warning: "Do not break it!"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios' Barak Ravid that the announcement "was news for me." He said Ukraine would accept an energy cease-fire if Russia agrees, and asked to be told when it begins. "If President Trump negotiated it with Putin — please tell us when the cease-fire begins — we are ready and we will accept it," he said.

Trump disclosed no terms. He did not say how long the arrangement would last, what "energy" covers, or when the clock started beyond his "effective immediately" phrasing.

The post came days after Trump unveiled a diesel purchasing deal with Moscow, which roiled Kyiv. On NBC's Meet the Press the same day, the fuel deal was framed as easing sanctions on Russia while the war continues. The program quoted Trump saying, "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president."

The midterms were 23 days away as of October 11.

If the cease-fire holds, it would mark a rare de-escalation around energy infrastructure in a war that has repeatedly targeted it.

No terms were published.

An agreement with no disclosed duration, no confirmed second party, and no start mechanics is not yet a functioning arrangement on the evidence available. It may become one.

Zelensky's response leaves the door open without closing the question. He did not reject the cease-fire. He asked to be told when it begins.

Until Moscow confirms and the terms are specified, the accurate description is this: Trump announced an energy cease-fire. Ukraine says it will accept one if Russia agrees. Whether one exists on the ground is unknown.
