Marseille left Stade de l'Aube with a 2-0 win and Troyes left with the shot count. Amine Harit struck five minutes after the interval and Himad Abdelli converted a stoppage-time penalty, but the scoreline and the underlying numbers tell two different stories about how the night went in Ligue 1.
Troyes outshot Marseille 15-5 across the 90 minutes and put three on target to Marseille's two. The hosts also generated more open-play xG, 0.92 to 0.27, and won the duel count 54-43. What they could not do was score, and Marseille's 63 percent possession and 89 percent pass accuracy gave them the platform to punish that waste.
Expected goals (xG) by half
Marseille's xG went from 0.11 in the first half to 1.15 in the second.
Figures in xG
Marseille's Control, Troyes' Chances
Both sides lined up in 4-2-3-1, and for long stretches the shapes cancelled each other out in midfield. Marseille's answer was patience on the ball: 572 accurate passes to Troyes' 281, and 220 passes in the opposition half to Troyes' 121. The visitors kept the ball, moved it side to side, and waited for the block to shift.
The first half produced almost nothing in the way of clear looks. Marseille managed a single shot before the break and zero on target; Troyes had five attempts but none on target either, with 0.20 xG to Marseille's 0.11. The half-time whistle arrived with the game level and neither goalkeeper seriously tested.
That changed five minutes into the second half. Emerson, pushing forward from his station on the left, supplied the assist and Amine Harit finished right-footed from a move worth 0.24 xG. It was Marseille's first shot on target of the match, and it was the goal that reframed everything Troyes had done well to that point.
Match stats
Marseille created the better chances: 1.26 xG to 1.14.
Troyes Push, Marseille Hold
The response from the hosts was genuine. Troyes took 10 of their 15 shots after the break and generated 0.93 of their 1.14 total xG in the second half, including two big chances. They won four second-half corners to Marseille's none and got 13 touches in the box to Marseille's 11. Antoine Mille, Lucas Maronnier and the rest of the attacking unit kept probing, but the finishing never matched the buildup.
Marseille's defensive work in that period deserves its share of the credit. They conceded territory and shot volume but protected the central areas, and their second-half duel numbers improved to 28-22 in their favour after losing that battle 32-15 in the first half. The substitutions on both sides — Troyes making changes through the second period, Marseille adjusting to see the game out — did not alter the pattern of Troyes possession without penetration.
The game stayed at 1-0 into stoppage time, which is exactly the kind of margin that invites a late equaliser. Instead, Marseille got the penalty. Himad Abdelli, who had been one of the more involved players on the night, stepped up and converted a spot-kick worth 0.79 xG to make it 2-0 and remove any doubt about the result.
What the Scoreline Says
Marseille's total xG of 1.26 against Troyes' 1.14 is about as close as a two-goal away win gets to flattering the winner. The visitors scored from two of their five shots, one of them a penalty, while Troyes generated 15 attempts and two big chances of their own without finding the net. Set plays were nearly identical — 0.21 xG for Troyes, 0.20 for Marseille — so the difference was not dead-ball quality either.
What Marseille did have was the lead, and they managed it. Harit's goal came from the kind of patient, Emerson-assisted move their possession game was built to produce, and Abdelli's penalty closed it out. Troyes end the night with 14 fouls, four yellow cards and nothing to show for their shot volume. Marseille end it with three points and a reminder that control without chances can still be enough when the chances you do create go in.
