Russell Brand guilty: what the verdict means for British comedy
Russell Brand found guilty of rape and sexual assault. A comedy producer steps back, Katy Perry omitted from prosecution opening, Katherine Ryan speaks.

A jury at London's Southwark Crown Court found Russell Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on November 5, 2026, after two days of deliberations and a four-week trial. He was found not guilty on two other counts of rape and one of attempted indecent assault. The charges stemmed from allegations by six women dating back to 1999.
The judge told Brand to expect a "custodial sentence of some length" and remanded him in custody until sentencing on Monday.
The verdict's consequences have already reached beyond the courtroom. Jack Bayles, head of comedy at Various Artists Limited, was asked to "step back" from his role and has been temporarily dropped from projects including an Apple TV series starring James Corden and Ruth Jones, the third season of the BBC's Such Brave Girls, and another new BBC show, Push. The action followed reports that Bayles laughed when Brand demanded a massage from a woman Brand was later found guilty of sexually assaulting.
Separately, it emerged that Katy Perry was omitted from the prosecution's opening argument after legal submissions from Brand's lawyers. She was not approached for a witness statement. The prosecution had planned to mention Perry but agreed to drop the reference.
Katherine Ryan, who had previously called out Brand's behavior, said she felt "grief and relief" after the conviction.
The verdict validates years of warnings from women like Ryan. It also raises questions about how the entertainment industry handles powerful figures and the relationships that surround them. Bayles's swift removal from active projects suggests companies are moving quickly to distance themselves from anyone connected to the case.
Brand's sentencing is scheduled for Monday. The judge's words indicate a prison term is expected. What remains unclear is whether Bayles will face permanent removal from his role, and whether Perry or other former partners will comment now that the trial has concluded.
