Roma and Real Madrid go into the interval level at 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, and the scoreline is the least interesting thing about the first half. Roma have had 54 percent of the ball, out-shot Madrid 8-4, put four attempts on target to Madrid's one, and built a 0.62 to 0.24 expected-goals edge. On the balance of chance creation, the home side have been the better team. On the scoreboard, they have nothing extra to show for it.
De Roon strikes, Mbappé answers
The opener came on 20 minutes, and it came from the pattern Roma had been building. Matias Soulé supplied the assist, Marten de Roon finished right-footed from open play, and the goal carried an xG value of just 0.05 — a low-percentage look converted by a midfielder arriving into the box rather than a centre-forward. It was the reward for Roma's territorial pressure, not a moment of individual brilliance.
Madrid's response took five minutes. Kylian Mbappé levelled on 25, right-footed, from open play, assisted by Yan Diomande. The xG on that finish was 0.03 — even lower than De Roon's. Madrid had spent the opening quarter of the match absorbing pressure and had created almost nothing; then they scored from a chance the model barely rated. That is the Mbappé tax. You can hold Madrid for 24 minutes, concede one look, and be level again.
Roma's control, Madrid's duels
The shape notes tell you why the half looked the way it did. Roma set up in a 3-4-1-2, Madrid in a 4-2-3-1. Roma's back three allowed the wing-backs to push high and the front two to pin Madrid's centre-backs, which is how the home side ended the half with 142 passes in Madrid's half to Madrid's 86. Roma also completed 248 passes at 87 percent accuracy against Madrid's 207 at 84 percent. The ball spent more time in Madrid's defensive third than the visitors would like.
Where Madrid stayed competitive was in the duel column: 19 duels won to Roma's 11. That is the mechanism keeping the game level. Madrid have lost the passing and territory battle but are winning the individual contests, which is how a team with 0.24 xG and one shot on target is still level at the break.
Roma's edge in the box is real: 15 touches in the box to Madrid's 10, four corners to three, and the only big chance of the half. Mario Hermoso, from his position in the back three, has generated 0.21 xG on his own — more than any Madrid player has managed. Soulé has 0.08 xG and the assist. Diomande has 0.04 xG and the assist for Madrid. The individual numbers are spread across Roma's structure; Madrid's are concentrated in one moment from Mbappé.
What the second half needs
Roma have to convert control into a second goal before Madrid's individual quality finds another low-xG finish. The foul count — Roma 5, Madrid 2, no yellow cards — suggests the game has been played at a controlled temperature, and Madrid have not yet needed to disrupt it. If Roma keep generating 0.60 xG from open play per half while Madrid generate 0.24, the home side should win this. If Madrid keep winning 63 percent of the duels, they will get another look.
The half-time numbers say Roma are ahead on merit and level on the scoreboard. That is the tension Carlo Ancelotti's side will happily carry into the second half.
