Nice 2-1 Lille. The scoreline tells a story of efficiency over territory. Lille controlled 59% of possession, fired 21 shots to Nice's 10, and accumulated 43 touches in the opposition box against 16. Yet they left the Allianz Riviera empty-handed, undone by a first-half own goal and a clinical second-half counter-attack.

Nice 2–1 Lille. xG 1.50 to 1.58. Shots 10 to 21. On target 4 to 8. Possession 41 to 59. Box touches 16 to 43. Big chances 3 to 3. Corners 3 to 7.

First half: Lille's territory, Nice's lead

Lille set up in a 4-2-3-1 that kept the ball circulating through midfield, while Nice sat in a 3-4-2-1 designed to absorb and strike. The visitors' territorial dominance was immediate — 60% possession and a 7-5 shot advantage by the break — but their final ball lacked precision. Only two of those efforts tested the goalkeeper, and their expected goals tally read a modest 0.63.

Nice needed one moment. In the 22nd minute, a routine cross from the right flank found Nathan Ngoy under minimal pressure. The defender's attempted clearance looped over his own goalkeeper, handing the hosts a lead they had barely threatened to earn. It was the only shot on target Nice managed before half-time, their open-play xG a mere 0.40.

Second half: Amoura doubles up, Ueda responds

The pattern persisted after the interval. Lille pushed higher, their full-backs Tiago Santos and Jonathan Clauss combining for 130 opposition-half passes across the 90 minutes, but the final third remained congested. Nice's compact structure forced attacks wide, where they could be smothered.

The decisive blow arrived in the 67th minute. Gauthier Hein collected a clearance, drove centrally, and slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Mohamed Amoura. The Algerian international took one touch to set himself and dispatched a left-footed finish past the advancing keeper — his goal carrying an xG of 0.77, the highest-quality chance of the match.

Lille responded with urgency. Substitute Maurits Kjærgaard injected creativity from the bench, and in the 79th minute his low cross found Ayase Ueda unmarked at the near post. The Japanese striker converted with a first-time left-foot finish (xG 0.18), setting up a tense final ten minutes. Yet Nice's defence held firm, blocking three late efforts and conceding only a single corner after the goal.

Efficiency the difference

The numbers frame a familiar paradox. Lille's 1.58 xG slightly exceeded Nice's 1.50, and both sides created three big chances. But the distribution told the tale: Nice generated all their threat from open play (1.50 xG), while Lille relied on set pieces for 0.34 of their total. In open play, Nice actually led the xG battle 1.50 to 1.23.

Amoura's goal was the outlier — a high-value chance converted. Ueda's was a lower-percentage finish that briefly revived Lille. The difference? Nice took their moment; Lille created volume but lacked the decisive edge.
