Newcastle's Draw at Fulham Buys Jaissle Time, Not Balance
A 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage eases the pressure on Matthias Jaissle, but the squad turnover since Eddie Howe's 2022/23 side remains the unresolved question.

Newcastle United's 1-1 draw at Fulham on Saturday was the kind of result that keeps a manager in his job without answering much about his team. Jacob Murphy put Newcastle ahead in the 80th minute at Craven Cottage, and Rodrigo Muniz levelled for Fulham three minutes later. Dan Burn had a first-half header from a corner disallowed after Yoane Wissa was penalised for a shirt pull on Timothy Castagne, so the visitors had already had a goal taken off them before Murphy's strike.
The numbers say Newcastle created the better chances. They finished with 1.14 expected goals to Fulham's 0.70, and three big chances to Fulham's none, despite having 42 per cent of the ball and taking nine shots to Fulham's 11. That is a side that did not dominate but carried the greater threat when it got forward. It is also a side operating well below its own recent output: Newcastle's nine shots here came against an average of 18.0 across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions, their 19 touches in the opposition box against an average of 31.8, their 106 passes in the opposition half against an average of 202.8, and their three corners against an average of 5.6.
The gap between performance and points
Those figures frame the draw as a small on-pitch reprieve rather than a turning point. Newcastle sit 13th with 11 points from nine Premier League matches. Matthias Jaissle had faced pressure after being booed off following the 1-0 home defeat to Everton, and he said he felt the club was committed to him during a week of speculation. The draw eases the immediate noise. It does not resolve the inconsistency: two wins in seven, a mid-table position, and a squad that has been reshaped around him.
The turnover is the bigger story. Bruno Guimaraes left for Arsenal, Sandro Tonali for Tottenham, Anthony Gordon for Barcelona, and Kieran Trippier departed as a free agent. The comparison that hangs over this season is with 2022/23, when Howe's Newcastle took 19 wins and 14 draws from 38 Premier League games, a return of 1.87 points per match. Jaissle's current record stands at three wins, three draws and four defeats from 10 league games, or 1.2 points per match. That is not a like-for-like comparison — different squad, different season — but it is the standard the club's recent past has set.
Away from the pitch, a Telegraph article claimed some Newcastle players feel hamstrung by poor recruitment and unhappy with Jaissle's tactics. The club has not confirmed that, and the reporting should be treated as reporting rather than established fact. Whether that is a recruitment problem, a tactical problem, or simply the time it takes to rebuild a midfield and attack, the next matches will start to answer.
Fulham, 15th with nine points from nine, will feel the draw was a point gained. Newcastle will feel it was two dropped, given the chances. The international break now interrupts a season that has not yet found its shape. When it returns, Newcastle face the question that the draw at Craven Cottage only postponed: whether the balance Howe once built can be reassembled, or whether this is simply what the current squad is.
