Inter return to Champions League action at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday night with their league-phase campaign already carrying a do-or-die weight. Cristian Chivu's side host Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday three of the 2026/27 competition, and the team sheets are in: Inter line up in a 3-5-2, Shakhtar in a 4-1-4-1.

The shape is the first real statement of the night. Inter's 3-5-2 means three centre-backs, five across midfield and two forwards — a structure that asks the wide midfielders to cover the full length of the flanks while the front two pin Shakhtar's back line. Alessandro Bastoni anchors the defensive three, with Ange Yoan Bonny and Carlos Augusto among the names tasked with making the system function at both ends.

Inter's Block and the Space Shakhtar Must Solve

Inter are the side setting the block, and the brief frames them as the low-block team in this matchup. That is the tactical knot Shakhtar have to untie: a 3-5-2 sitting off the ball can smother central lanes, and the five-across midfield is designed to squeeze the space between the lines. For Shakhtar's 4-1-4-1, the single holding midfielder becomes the escape valve — if he can receive under pressure and turn, the four ahead of him can attack the channels either side of Inter's three centre-backs.

If he cannot, Shakhtar's possession dies in front of the block. That is the risk baked into a 4-1-4-1 against a back three: the extra centre-back covers, the wing-backs push up, and the away side's midfield four can find themselves passing sideways rather than through.

What the Selections Say

Bastoni's presence in the Inter three is the platform. He is the defender most comfortable stepping into midfield with the ball, and against a lone striker he will have licence to advance and make Inter's build-up a four-man problem for Shakhtar's front line. Bonny and Carlos Augusto give Chivu two forwards who can occupy the Shakhtar centre-backs and stop the away side from committing the holding midfielder forward.

Shakhtar's 4-1-4-1 is a containment shape first. The single pivot shields the back four, the wide midfielders drop to make a five when needed, and Alisson Santana is the reference point in the attacking line. Djed Spence is the other name to watch in the wide areas, where Inter's wing-backs will be asked to run the full length of the pitch.

The Stakes at San Siro

Inter have already reached the point where dropped points at home change the arithmetic of the league phase. A top-eight place is the target, and matchday three against Shakhtar is the kind of fixture that decides whether that chase stays alive or becomes a scrap through the remaining rounds. Shakhtar arrive at the Meazza with nothing to lose and a shape built to frustrate.

The team sheets are confirmed. The 3-5-2 and the 4-1-4-1 are on the board. What happens in the space between Inter's block and Shakhtar's pivot decides the night.
