Sporting CP have confirmed a 4-2-3-1 for tonight's Champions League meeting with LASK at the Estádio José Alvalade, with Geny Catamo handed a start in the attacking line behind the striker. LASK arrive in Lisbon in a 3-4-1-2, and both team sheets are now locked in at 0-0 before kick-off.

The selection is the story. Catamo's inclusion gives Sporting a direct, one-v-one option on the flank from the first whistle rather than as a second-half change, and it shapes how the home side will attack a back three that must decide, every time the ball goes wide, whether to send a centre-back out or hold the line and concede the cross.

Sporting's 4-2-3-1 and the Catamo Call

Sporting's shape is a 4-2-3-1: a back four, a double pivot in front of it, three attacking players behind a lone centre-forward. The mechanics are straightforward — the two holding midfielders screen the space in front of the centre-backs and let the full-backs push high, while the three behind the striker rotate across the width of the pitch to isolate defenders.

Catamo is the player that rotation is built to free. Starting him means Sporting want the ball moved quickly to the right side before LASK's wing-backs can drop into a five, forcing the visiting back three to defend crosses and cutbacks with numerical parity rather than a spare man. Eduardo Quaresma's presence in the defensive unit matters for the same reason: with a back four, Sporting need centre-backs comfortable defending large areas alone when the full-backs are advanced.

Alemão is the other name to track in the Sporting XI. In a 4-2-3-1, the attacking midfielder is the player who decides whether the shape becomes a 4-3-3 in possession or stays a genuine 4-2-3-1 with a fixed pocket between the lines. If Alemão drifts, LASK's back three has to choose between stepping into midfield and leaving the centre-forward isolated against two centre-backs.

LASK's 3-4-1-2 and the Lang-Andrade Axis

LASK line up in a 3-4-1-2: three centre-backs, two wing-backs, a central midfield pair, one attacking midfielder and two strikers. The mechanics of that shape are a compact central block with the wing-backs responsible for the entire width of the pitch, and two forwards whose job is to occupy the opposing centre-backs so the attacking midfielder can arrive late into the box.

Christoph Lang and Andrés Andrade are the two names that make the system function. Lang in the attacking midfield role is the link between the midfield pair and the front two — if he can receive on the half-turn, LASK can play through Sporting's first line of pressure rather than around it. Andrade's role in the central pair is to cover the space Lang vacates, which is exactly the space Sporting's double pivot will try to attack on the counter.

The structural risk for LASK is the same one every back three accepts: the wing-backs must run the full length of the pitch, and against a 4-2-3-1 with two wide attackers, they will be pinned deep for long stretches. If LASK's wing-backs cannot get out, the front two of the 3-4-1-2 becomes a front two with no supply, and the shape collapses into a 5-3-2 without the ball.

What the Selections Say About the Game

Sporting's XI says they intend to dominate the ball and attack the flanks early. A 4-2-3-1 with Catamo starting and Alemão in the pocket is a possession-first setup, and the double pivot gives the full-backs licence to advance without leaving the centre-backs exposed to LASK's front two.

LASK's XI says they will defend in a central block and look to spring Lang and the two strikers on the break. The 3-4-1-2 is not a passive shape — it is designed to keep two forwards high at all times, which means Sporting's centre-backs will be tested in transition every time an attack breaks down.

The decisive detail is the wide areas. Sporting's 4-2-3-1 wants to create two-on-one situations against LASK's wing-backs; LASK's 3-4-1-2 wants its wing-backs to survive those situations long enough for the central three to stay compact. Whichever side wins that contest controls the tempo of the match.

Kick-off is at the Estádio José Alvalade with the score at 0-0. Both starting XIs are confirmed, and the shapes are set.
