Inter and Parma have confirmed identical 3-5-2 setups for Saturday's Serie A meeting at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, a symmetry that hands the tactical initiative to the home side before a ball is kicked.
Both teams will field three centre-backs, five across midfield and two forwards. For Inter, that shape is the familiar framework of their season; for Parma, it is the structure they must hold without the ball against the league's most persistent home pressure.
Inter's Shape and the Missing Midfielder
Inter's 3-5-2 gives Simone Inzaghi's side five midfielders to circulate possession and two forwards to pin Parma's back three. The mechanics are straightforward: width from the wing-backs, overloads in central areas, and a front two that can split to occupy the outside centre-backs.
The confirmed absence of Curtis Jones removes a central midfield option after the international break. Jones suffered the injury in training and is ruled out of this weekend's clash, which narrows Inter's rotation in the middle of the park and puts added weight on the five who start.
Benjamin Pavard and Carlos Augusto are among the names to watch in this system. Pavard's role in the back three and Augusto's positioning on the left give Inter their defensive base and their attacking overlap on that flank.
Parma's Block and the Space Problem
Parma arrive at the Meazza in the same 3-5-2, but their task is different. The away side is the block team here, and a 3-5-2 without the ball means three centre-backs absorbing the front two, five midfielders screening the space in front of them, and two forwards left to chase whatever comes loose.
The risk is structural. When Inter push their wing-backs high, Parma's midfield five must decide whether to follow wide or protect the centre. Either choice opens a lane. Diego Carlos and Edoardo Corvi are the players who will feel that squeeze most directly — Corvi in goal behind a back three that will be asked to defend crosses and cutbacks, Diego Carlos in the defensive line managing the two Inter forwards.
Andy Diouf is the other name that matters for Parma. In a five-man midfield, his ability to carry the ball out of pressure is the escape valve. If Inter's press pins Parma deep, Diouf's touches and passing become the difference between relief and another wave of Inter attack.
What the Selections Imply
Two 3-5-2s do not produce a neutral match. The home side owns the ball and the territory; the away side owns the problem of where to concede space. Inter's missing midfielder trims their depth but not their shape. Parma's block will be tested from the first minute, and the game's decisive detail is likely to be how long their five across midfield can hold the centre before Inter's wing-backs and front two force a gap.
Kick-off at San Siro is set for 18:00 in Serie A Matchday 6.
