Inter Miami CF begin life without Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba on Wednesday night, and they do it against an FC Cincinnati team the market has already written off. The two Miami stars are unavailable for the Major League Soccer meeting at Nu Stadium after missing this week's All-Star Game, a league-rules absence that strips the home side of its chief creator and its first-choice left back in the same team sheet.
Cincinnati arrive as the outsider at 18% to win, with Miami the clear favourite two days out from kick-off. Miami sit third in the Eastern Conference. That is the gap the selections have to cover.
Miami's 4-3-3 Without Its Two Reference Points
Miami line up in a 4-3-3. Without Messi, the attacking third loses the player who normally decides where the ball goes and when; without Alba, the left side loses the overlap that turns that 4-3-3 into a genuine three-man attack rather than a front three waiting for service. The shape stays the same. The supply line does not.
That puts weight on the midfield three to progress the ball rather than defer to a single outlet, and it puts weight on the front three to generate their own separation. Against a back five, that is the hard part.
Cincinnati's 3-5-2 and the Block Miami Must Break
Cincinnati set up in a 3-5-2: three centre-backs, five across midfield, two forwards. The block side is the away side, and the shape is built to squeeze exactly the space Miami's front three want to occupy. Five across midfield means the half-spaces in front of the back three are congested by design, and the two forwards give Cincinnati a counter-attacking outlet that does not require committing numbers forward.
For Miami, the arithmetic is unforgiving. A 4-3-3 against a 3-5-2 leaves a spare centre-back in Cincinnati's favour and asks Miami's full-backs to provide width without leaving the back four exposed to the front two. With Alba absent, that ask falls on a different profile of player.
The Names Carrying the Night
Bryan Ramírez, Casemiro, David Ayala, David Douděra and Dayne St Clair are the players the confirmed XIs put in the frame. Casemiro's positioning in Miami's midfield three is the pivot the whole build-up runs through; if Cincinnati's five-man midfield can cut the lane into him, Miami's 4-3-3 becomes a long-ball team by accident. Ayala and Douděra give Cincinnati legs in that five, and St Clair's handling behind a back three that will spend long stretches defending crosses is the last line of a plan that accepts pressure.
Ramírez is the wildcard. In a Miami attack missing Messi's final pass, someone has to take the shots and the touches in the box that the Argentine normally owns. The team sheet says the opportunity is there. The 18% number says Cincinnati believe they can survive whoever takes it.
Kick-off at Nu Stadium is set. Miami's third place is the stake; Cincinnati's price is the insult. Both starting XIs are in, and neither side has an excuse left.
