RB Leipzig conceded inside 37 seconds at the Red Bull Arena on 7 November and still won 5-2. Anton Kade put Augsburg ahead from the rebound after Maarten Vandevoordt saved Arijon Ibrahimović's initial effort, and for half an hour the home side trailed a game few expected them to lose. Then Ezechiel Banzuzi equalised on 34 minutes, Christopher Nkunku scored a minute later, David Raum added a third in first-half stoppage time, and Rômulo and Christoph Baumgartner extended the lead after the break. Uchenna Ogundu scored a late consolation for Augsburg.

The scoreline suggests a rout. The numbers describe something closer to a contest. Leipzig had 65 per cent possession and 17 shots to Augsburg's 13, but only seven shots on target to Augsburg's eight. Augsburg created five big chances to Leipzig's three. The expected goals were 2.23 for Leipzig and 2.03 for Augsburg — a narrow edge for the winners, not the margin the five goals imply. That is one match, not a trend, but it is the kind of figure that tends to fall back towards the mean.

The Gruda record

Brajan Gruda completed ten successful dribbles in the first half alone, a new Leipzig record for a Bundesliga match and the highest single-match figure by any player in the Bundesliga this season. He provided two assists, for Banzuzi's equaliser and Nkunku's immediate second.

Leipzig's passing numbers were also unusual. They completed 680 accurate passes, against an average of 387.8 across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. They made 352 passes in the opposition half, against an average of 160.0. Possession was 65 per cent, against an average of 49.8. Corners were down — two here against an average of 4.8 — but the territory and the ball circulation were well above their season baseline. The incision arrived with Gruda.

The win was Leipzig's third consecutive Bundesliga victory and their fifth straight home league win, keeping their perfect home record intact. It lifts them to third place on 18 points from nine matches, three behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. That is a meaningful recovery after a difficult start and criticism of Demichelis, and it revives their credentials as contenders rather than also-rans.

Whether that revival holds is a question the next matches will answer. Whether that is a repeatable mechanism or a one-off against a favourable matchup is not yet known.

Leipzig's next league fixture will show whether the passing, the territory and the carries can produce a more conventional scoreline. For now, the record books show a 22-year-old winger with ten first-half dribbles and two assists, and a team that turned an early deficit into a rout.
