Bayern München host Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in the Champions League, and the team news has landed on one name: Joshua Kimmich does not start.
Kimmich had been pencilled in as a certainty for this fixture. Bayern assistant coach Aaron Danks confirmed the situation had shifted before kick-off. "Josh was absent today for personal reasons. I'm not sure what that will mean for tomorrow," Danks said. The answer arrived with the lineups. Bayern's double pivot is reshaped for the biggest home night of their European campaign so far.
Bayern's Midfield Without Kimmich
Aleksandar Pavlović is the player Bayern's setup now leans on in the middle. In a 4-2-3-1, the two holders screen the back four, receive under pressure from the centre-backs, and turn defence into the first forward pass. Pavlović's role in that mechanism is the one Kimmich would ordinarily anchor, and how Bayern cope with Arsenal's press through him is the central question of the first half.
Alphonso Davies starts on the left of the back four. In this shape, the full-backs provide the width when the wide attackers drift inside, and Davies' recovery speed is Bayern's insurance against Arsenal's transitions. The 4-2-3-1 only works if the full-backs time their advances; Davies pushing high and Pavlović covering behind him is the trade Bayern have chosen.
Arsenal Match the Shape, Not the Approach
Arsenal line up in the same 4-2-3-1, with Bruno Guimarães in the double pivot and Bukayo Saka on the right of the attacking three. Identical shapes do not mean identical games. Arsenal's version asks the holders to progress the ball quickly into the wide creators, and Saka's duel with Davies on that flank is the matchup both teams have built toward.
David Raya starts in goal. Against a Bayern side missing its usual midfield metronome, Raya's distribution becomes a weapon: Arsenal can bypass the first line of pressure with a direct ball rather than playing through a press that Bayern, without Kimmich, may struggle to sustain at the same intensity.
What the Selections Decide
Both teams have chosen control over chaos. Two 4-2-3-1s at the Allianz Arena sets up a game of who wins the middle third first, and Bayern are running that contest without the player who normally dictates it. Pavlović's composure under Arsenal's counter-press, and Guimarães' ability to find Saka before Davies can set his feet, are the two levers that will decide which identical shape actually functions.
Kick-off is at 7:00 PM UTC. Bayern's home crowd will expect the shape to hold without Kimmich; Arsenal's selection suggests they intend to test exactly that.
