A draw that preserved rather than settled
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening, a result that leaves both clubs on 18 points and unbeaten in the Bundesliga. Konrad Laimer put Bayern ahead in the 38th minute, moments after Jobe Bellingham had a goal ruled out for Dortmund. Harry Kane missed a penalty on the hour, Serhou Guirassy equalised almost immediately, Dayot Upamecano restored Bayern's lead in the 66th minute, and substitute Fábio Silva rescued a point for Dortmund in the 89th.
The temptation is to file this as a Dortmund statement, a demonstration that the gap at the top is real. The numbers tell a more complicated story.
What the chance volume actually says
Bayern finished with 56 per cent possession, 23 shots to Dortmund's 12, and six big chances to Dortmund's none. Their expected goals figure was 4.48; Dortmund's was 0.74. On shots on target, Dortmund edged it 6-5, but that is the only attacking metric in which they led.
Dortmund's own season averages make the contrast sharper. They arrived at the Allianz having averaged 57 per cent possession, 33.8 touches in the opposition box and 1.69 expected goals across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. Here they recorded 44 per cent possession, 24 touches in the box and 0.74 expected goals. Their two corners were well down on the 8.0 they had averaged. Their goals minus expected goals figure was 1.26, against a season average of 0.0.
That last number is the one that matters most. Dortmund scored twice from a chance pool worth less than one goal. Bayern generated more than four goals' worth of chances and scored twice. The finishing variance ran heavily in Dortmund's favour, and it is the reason they left with a point rather than none.
Kane's miss and the wider picture
Kane's penalty miss on the hour, in the same week he was named Ballon d'Or winner, will dominate the post-match conversation. It should not be treated as the sole cause of the result. Bayern still led after it, still created enough to win comfortably, and still conceded an 89th-minute equaliser to a substitute. The miss mattered because it kept Dortmund within reach, not because it alone decided the match.
Vincent Kompany was absent from the bench, with assistant coach Aaron Danks and the rest of the coaching staff tasked with keeping the team on track. Bayern have not said how much that affected the performance, and it would be speculation to claim it did. What is clear is that a side missing its head coach still produced the dominant chance profile of the match.
What Dortmund can take from it
Dortmund's recent run had been mixed: a 1-0 defeat at Bodø/Glimt, a goalless draw at Union Berlin, a 2-1 win at Sabah FK, a 1-0 home win over Frankfurt, a 3-2 DFB Pokal win over Werder Bremen, and now this draw. They have added Joey Veerman, Joane Gadou, Ethan Nwaneri, Giannis Konstantelias, Kauã Prates and Konstantinos Karetsas since the summer, while Salih Özcan, Pascal Groß, Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi, Kjell Wätjen and Cole Campbell have departed. The squad is still settling.
That context makes a point at the Allianz more valuable than the performance alone would suggest. Dortmund were second-best for long stretches and still extended their unbeaten start. Whether that is a sign of a genuine title challenge or a well-timed smash-and-grab is a question the next few weeks will answer.
What the draw did preserve is clear: both clubs remain level at the top, neither has lost in the league, and the gap Bayern hoped to open has not materialised. The chance volume says Bayern should have won. The table says it does not matter.
