Barcelona 6-1 Alavés: Yamal and Raphinha share the load as Flick's side reclaim top spot

Barcelona's six-goal rout of Alavés was less about one scorer than about how the chances were shared, with Fermín López twice setting up Raphinha.

Barcelona returned to the top of LaLiga with a 6-1 win over Deportivo Alavés at Spotify Camp Nou on 31 October 2026, a result that stopped a two-match losing run and restored a two-point lead over Atlético de Madrid. Raphinha scored twice, Lamine Yamal scored twice, and Fermín López provided the assists for both of Raphinha's goals. The scoreline invites the easy reading — a champion side reasserting itself after defeats to PSG and Real Madrid — but the more telling detail is who was setting up whom.

The shape of the scoring

Raphinha opened the scoring in the 8th minute and added a second in the 41st, both from Fermín López deliveries. Those goals took him to 14 and 15 league goals for the season. Fermín himself scored in the 23rd minute, and Anthony Gordon added Barcelona's sixth in the 81st. Mariano Díaz pulled one back for Alavés in the 84th.

The distribution matters because it complicates the assumption that Barcelona's attack runs through a single creator. Two players scored twice; a third — Fermín — both scored and assisted twice. That is a front line built to spread responsibility rather than concentrate it.

What the numbers say about the performance

The raw figures back up the dominance. Barcelona had 77 per cent possession to Alavés's 23, 13 shots to seven, seven on target to three, and seven big chances to two. Their expected goals of 3.19 against Alavés's 0.62 describe a match in which the home side created steadily and the visitors rarely threatened. Barcelona's xG from open play was 3.17, against an average of 1.72 across their earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions — a marked jump in chance quality from open play.

There is a wrinkle worth noting. Barcelona scored six goals from 3.19 xG, a difference of 2.81. Across their earlier matches this season, that difference averaged 0.0. In other words, this was an evening of clinical finishing rather than a repeatable pattern. The chance creation was genuinely elevated; the conversion was exceptional. Whether that reflects a side finding its range or simply a good night against a struggling opponent is a question the next fixtures will answer.

One number cuts against the narrative of total control: corners were level at three apiece. Barcelona's average across their earlier 2026/27 matches was 5.8, so this was a below-par return from set-piece situations. It did not matter here, because the goals came from open play and the game was settled by half-time, but it is a reminder that dominance in possession does not always translate into pressure from dead balls.

The bigger picture

The win followed a 4-2 defeat to PSG in the Champions League and a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Clásico, and it returned Barcelona to first place. They have now scored 46 goals in 11 league matches, a rate that underlines how little the recent setbacks have disrupted their attacking output. The question that lingers is not whether Barcelona can score — they clearly can — but whether the load can stay this evenly shared when the fixtures tighten and the margins shrink.

Fermín's role is the thread to watch. Two assists for Raphinha, plus a goal of his own, made him the hinge between midfield and attack on an afternoon when Yamal also scored twice. If that balance holds, Barcelona's dependence on any single creator looks less like a structural weakness and more like a choice. If it does not, the six-goal afternoons against mid-table opposition will tell us less than the narrow ones against the teams around them.
