The yield on 30-year UK gilts rose 13 basis points on Wednesday to 6.036%, the highest since January 1998 and above a previous record set on 1 October. The move took the yield from 5.90% to 6.03%, its fastest pace since May.

The rise was not a British story alone. Thirty-year US Treasury yields reached their highest in 22 years, and 10-year Treasuries traded near levels last seen roughly two decades ago. Brent crude rose as much as 1.8% to more than $102 a barrel. Analysts cited fears about surging government spending, higher oil prices and rising interest rates.

The gilt move followed a Tuesday meeting between finance minister John Healey and economists working for primary dealers, also known as gilt-edged market makers, to assess market sentiment.

Higher gilt yields directly raise the interest cost of UK government borrowing, tightening the fiscal space available to Healey ahead of his first budget on 28 October. That budget will be the first set of OBR forecasts since the war in Iran pushed global energy prices higher, framing a challenging economic context. If yields stay elevated, the government faces a choice between higher taxes, lower spending, or more borrowing — each with political and market consequences.

What remains unknown is how much of the yield rise is UK-specific fiscal risk and how much is the synchronized global selloff. The 30-year gilt sits at the sharpest edge of a worldwide bond rout, not an isolated British event. Whether the yield holds above 6% in the days before 28 October, and what Healey announces to address the borrowing cost pressure, will determine how much room he has when he stands up.
