INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan announced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, that the commission will deploy artificial intelligence to verify results in Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The commission has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division under its Information and Communications Technology department. Automated auditing and anomaly detection tools are being integrated into result verification and database monitoring under a five-pillar AI governance framework.

Amupitan said AI will not replace human decision-making and that all AI-assisted processes remain subject to mandatory human oversight. The commission says the technology will support rather than independently determine electoral decisions, and will also be used to detect cyberattacks.

That safeguard is the central test. Result verification is where electoral credibility is won or lost. If AI flags an anomaly, INEC must show who reviews the flag, on what timeline, and with what transparency.

Registered voters by state

Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna represent significant portions of the national voters' register.

The announcement lands amid broader 2027 preparations. INEC said the national voters' register now contains more than 103 million voters after a three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise and biometric clean-up. Lagos has 7,488,633 registered voters, Kano 6,570,276, and Kaduna 4,662,640.

INEC also confirmed it has begun reviewing the Supreme Court's September 24, 2026 judgment upholding sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026 and restoring the commission's revised timetable. The review follows complaints from political parties, aggrieved aspirants and National Assembly members.

The governance architecture matters more than the technology label. A dedicated division and a five-pillar framework are institutional commitments. Whether they produce accountable verification depends on details INEC has not yet disclosed: procurement, testing, audit, and the human chain of command when a machine raises a flag.
