On 29 April 2026 US prosecutors charged Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and nine others with drug trafficking and weapons offences.

What we found

US Attorney Jay Clayton announced the indictment, which alleges the officials protected the cartel in exchange for bribes and political support. Rocha Moya denies the charges and took temporary leave; Mexico asked for evidence. Our first version wrongly said no such indictment existed.
