“Brand is accused of three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one allegation of indecent assault.” — UK prosecution. Our verdict: True.

The claim was made by the UK prosecution during the opening of Russell Brand's trial at Southwark Crown Court, as reported on 14 October 2026.
Our verdict
True
The claim is accurate. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised exactly these charges, and the same figures were reported by the BBC, The Guardian and other outlets when the trial opened in October 2026.
What we found
We rated this claim true. The Crown Prosecution Service, the body that brings criminal cases in England and Wales, published a statement in December 2025 confirming it had authorised three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault against Russell Brand. That is the same total of seven charges described in the claim.
This was backed up when the trial opened at Southwark Crown Court. The Guardian reported on 14 October 2026 that the prosecution told the court Mr Brand faces three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault. The BBC, in a report on 12 October 2026, and a Guardian report on the jury being sworn in on 13 October 2026, gave the same figures.
Some earlier reporting gave different totals. Those stories came from an earlier stage of the case, when fewer charges had been authorised, and they do not conflict with the final set of charges confirmed by the prosecuting authority.

What we could not confirm
- Whether the charges could still be amended before the trial ends. This fact check covers the charges as they stand now, not any future changes.
- Whether the underlying allegations are true. We only checked the number and type of charges brought by the prosecution, not Mr Brand's guilt or innocence.
