What we found

Scott Bessent did make this claim. Several news outlets, including Iran International and JFeed, reported on 11 October 2026 that the US Treasury Secretary said Iran had no oil at sea and was facing negative cash flow. That part is well documented.

However, confirming whether the claim itself is true is a different matter. The only direct shipping evidence we found is a tanker tracker from United Against Nuclear Iran, which reported no crude oil loadings as of 30 September 2026. That is twelve days before Bessent spoke, so it does not tell us what was happening on 12 October. On the cash flow side, we found no month-specific financial data for Iran covering that date.

Because the evidence does not line up with the date of the claim, we cannot say the claim is accurate, and we cannot say it is false. We simply could not find enough public evidence either way.

  • Supports the claim

A tanker tracker from United Against Nuclear Iran found no crude oil loadings and a total halt to crude exports since 14 July 2026, as of 30 September 2026. This is the closest direct evidence, but it does not cover 12 October 2026. [5]
