The claim
“More than 260 people have been killed and at least 60,000 displaced since the Manipur conflict began.”
Background in coverage of renewed violence in Manipur in April 2026.
Our verdict
Mostly True
News agencies use about 260 deaths and 60,000 displaced; Manipur's own figures are lower, at 217 deaths and 58,881 displaced.
What we found
Reuters puts the toll since May 2023 at some 260 dead and more than 60,000 displaced. The state Home Department recorded 58,881 displaced to March 2026 and 217 deaths, counting only those where compensation was paid. The claim is close to the widely used figures, but official counts are slightly lower.
