“Paul LePage's campaign team contacted all unreported towns and determined that his opponent has no mathematical path to victory.” — Paul LePage. Our verdict: False.

Paul LePage made the claim on 4 November 2026 while declaring victory in Maine's 2nd Congressional District race, as reported by Maine Public and other outlets.
Our verdict
False
Paul LePage did say his campaign had contacted every unreported town and concluded his opponent had no mathematical path to victory, but the numbers do not back up that conclusion. The claim is false because the opponent still had a way to win.
What we found
LePage's statement is well documented. Maine Public, WABI, WAGMTV and WMTW all reported on 4 November 2026 that he said his team had called all unreported towns and found no path for his opponent. So there is no doubt he made the claim. The problem is the maths. Live results from NBC News show the opponent, Matthew Dunlap, would need 53.2% of the remaining votes to overtake LePage. That is a demanding target, but it is a path. A path does not have to be likely to exist. Because the vote data contradicts the claim that no path exists, we rate the claim false. We could not independently confirm that the campaign really did contact every unreported town, but that does not change the verdict, since the mathematical part of the claim fails on its own.
The evidence
1 of 4 sources contradict the claim; none support it.
- Background
Maine Public reported that LePage said his campaign team contacted all unreported towns and determined his opponent had no mathematical path to victory. [1]
- Background
WAGMTV carried the same statement from LePage about contacting unreported towns and his opponent having no path. [2]
- Background
WMTW reported that LePage made the statement while declaring victory on 4 November 2026. [3]
- Contradicts the claim
NBC News live results show the opponent still had a mathematical path to victory if he won a sufficient share of the remaining votes, contradicting the claim that no path existed. [4]
What we could not confirm
- We could not independently confirm that LePage's campaign actually contacted every unreported town. The only sources for that detail are reports quoting LePage himself.
- The mathematical assessment rests on NBC News vote estimates and the 53.2% threshold. Final certified results could differ.
How we checked
We looked at contemporaneous news reports from several Maine outlets that quoted LePage directly, and we compared his statement with live vote results and the share of remaining votes his opponent would need to win. We reviewed 10 relevant sources.
