The claim
“Several EU member states sent military aid to Cyprus after a drone attack on a British airbase there on 28 February.”
Background in coverage of European defence of Cyprus during the Iran war.
Our verdict
Mostly True
Greece, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands sent forces to Cyprus after a drone hit RAF Akrotiri, but the strike was on 2 March 2026, not 28 February.
What we found
An Iranian-made drone, believed launched by Hezbollah, hit the runway at RAF Akrotiri shortly after midnight on 2 March 2026. Greece sent frigates and F-16s, France anti-drone systems and a frigate, and Italy and Spain frigates. 28 February was the day the US-Israeli strikes on Iran began.
