The claim
“Mali's Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in the Saturday attacks, and the northern city of Kidal was seized by armed fighters.”
Coverage of the 25 April 2026 attacks across Mali.
Our verdict
Mostly True
Mali's government confirmed Camara died after a suicide attack on his home; separatists said they took Kidal, but the army disputed that.
What we found
Government spokesman Issa Ousmane Coulibaly said a suicide car bomb hit Camara's residence in Kati and he died in hospital. The FLA said Kidal had fallen; the army chief said forces had 'tactically repositioned' and operations continued. The first part is confirmed; the second was disputed at the time.
