The claim
“Australia's prime minister secured a deal with Malaysian state energy firm Petronas to supply excess fuel after trips to Singapore and Brunei.”
Coverage of Anthony Albanese's fuel-security trip to Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia.
Our verdict
Misleading
Anwar said Petronas would supply surplus fuel once domestic needs were met, but Malaysia's PMO later said Petronas was not selling diesel abroad and the fuel came from a BP-Viva contract.
What we found
Albanese met Petronas executives in Kuala Lumpur and Anwar Ibrahim spoke of an assurance on surplus fuel. On 22 April Malaysia's Prime Minister's Office said neither the government nor Petronas was selling oil or diesel to other countries and the diesel bound for Australia was under a Viva Energy and BP contract. There was no Petronas supply deal.
