Elon MuskNews reportOctober 21, 2026

Elon Musk made the claim in a public statement about the Austin bar shooting, reported by Tech Times on 7 May 2026.

Our verdict

Partly True

Elon Musk said the three people killed in the Austin bar shooting were students. Two of the three victims were students, but there is no evidence that the third was, so the claim is only partly true.

What we found

The FBI's investigative update on the March 1 Austin shooting confirms that three people died outside Buford's Backyard Beer Garden in downtown Austin. Reporting from Fox 7 Austin, KXAN and Spectrum Local News identifies two of the victims, Savitha Shan and Ryder Harrington, as students. Shan was a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, and Harrington had attended Texas Tech University. However, the same reports name the third victim as Jorge Pederson, aged 30, and none of them describes him as a student. The FBI also stated that the victims were not all students. Because the evidence supports student status for two victims but not the third, we rate the claim partly true.
