“Over 2 million people have been killed in the war between Russia and Ukraine.” — Donald Trump. Our verdict: False.

Donald Trump said this to reporters as he left the White House on 10 October 2026, CBS News reported.
Our verdict
False
False. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates 525,000 to 600,000 soldiers killed on both sides, and the UN has counted about 15,000 civilian deaths. Over 2 million is its estimate of casualties: killed, wounded and missing.
What we found
Leaving the White House on 10 October 2026, Donald Trump told reporters that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had "lost 30% of your country" and that there had been "over 2 million people killed", CBS News reported.
No official count exists; Russia and Ukraine do not publish timely figures. The most detailed estimate, from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in July 2026, puts Russian military deaths at 400,000 to 450,000 and Ukrainian at 125,000 to 150,000 from February 2022 to June 2026: 525,000 to 600,000 in all. The UN human rights mission had counted 14,999 civilian deaths by December 2025, which it says is likely an undercount.
Even with generous allowances for undercounting, deaths come to well under a third of 2 million. The same CSIS study puts combined casualties, people killed, wounded or missing, at above 2 million, which is the figure Trump's number matches.
The numbers
Civilians killed in Ukraine
Civilian deaths rose from 968 (Dec 2024‑May 2025) to 2222 (Jan‑Aug 2026), still far below the claimed 2 million total war deaths.

The evidence
2 of 3 sources contradict the claim; none support it.
- Background
Trump said there had been "over 2 million people killed" in the war. [1]
- Contradicts the claim
CSIS estimates 400,000 to 450,000 Russian and 125,000 to 150,000 Ukrainian military deaths to June 2026; combined casualties, including wounded and missing, are above 2 million. [2]
- Contradicts the claim
The UN human rights mission counted 14,999 civilian deaths since the invasion, likely an undercount. [3]
What we could not confirm
- An official count of military deaths; neither Russia nor Ukraine publishes one.
