AEK Athens have confirmed a 4-4-2 for Wednesday's Champions League league-phase meeting with Real Madrid at the Allwyn Arena, with Aboubakary Koïta named in the starting XI. Real Madrid line up in a 4-2-3-1, Antonio Rüdiger, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries all included from the start.

It is the first competitive meeting between the clubs. Kick-off is 17:45 Athens time. AEK have won one of their three league-phase matches this season; Real Madrid arrive with three wins from three and a chance to make it four in a row.

Koïta Leads the AEK Front Two

AEK's 4-4-2 puts Koïta at the sharp end of a two-man attack, with Alberto Brignoli in goal behind a back four. The shape asks AEK to defend in two banks of four and spring forward through the front pair rather than a lone striker. Koïta's role is the one to watch: he is the designated outlet when AEK turn possession over, and the player Real Madrid's centre-backs will have to track when he pulls into the channels.

The home side's league-phase record — one win from three — frames the evening. AEK have been almost perfect at the Allwyn Arena this term, but the visit of a free-scoring Real Madrid is the sternest test that record has faced. A 4-4-2 against a 4-2-3-1 means AEK's midfield four must handle Real's three central attackers without being dragged apart; if the wide midfielders tuck in too far, Real's full-backs get the ball high and early.

Rüdiger, Silva and Dumfries All Start

Real Madrid's 4-2-3-1 is built around a double pivot behind three attacking midfielders and a lone centre-forward. Rüdiger anchors the defence, Silva operates in the attacking line, and Dumfries starts on the right of the back four or as a wing-back depending on how Madrid build. All three were confirmed in the XI.

The selection gives Madrid a settled spine: Rüdiger's presence at centre-back, Silva's link play between the lines, and Dumfries' overlap on the right. Against a 4-4-2, Madrid's extra central midfielder — the No.10 in the 4-2-3-1 — is the free man. If AEK's midfield four stay narrow, Madrid can switch the ball to Dumfries and attack the space behind AEK's left midfielder. If AEK's wide players push out, Silva gets the ball in the pocket between the lines.

Madrid have scored freely in this campaign and are chasing a fourth consecutive win in the competition. AEK's task is to keep the game compact, deny Silva the half-turn, and make the first 20 minutes uncomfortable for a side that has not yet dropped points in the league phase.

What the Selections Say

AEK have gone with a front two rather than a lone striker, a signal that they intend to carry a threat on the counter rather than sit entirely behind the ball. Koïta's inclusion is the clearest attacking statement in the XI. Brignoli starts in goal.

Madrid's XI is close to full strength in the areas that matter: Rüdiger in defence, Silva in the creative line, Dumfries on the flank. The 4-2-3-1 gives them a natural overload in central midfield against AEK's 4-4-2, and the individual quality of Silva and Dumfries is the most likely route to breaking a compact block.

The match is the fourth round of the 2026 Champions League league stage. AEK have one win from three; Madrid have three from three. The Allwyn Arena has been a fortress domestically for AEK this season, and Madrid's ability to score early will determine whether that holds in Europe.
