Two Storms in Three Days: Boelo Kills One and Leaves 161,400 Without Power
A man died near Castle Douglas as Storm Boelo left 161,400 properties without power — the second named storm in three days, with more Atlantic weather forecast.
A 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after a falling tree struck him near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway at about 10:30 on Sunday, Police Scotland said. Dangerous conditions were limiting engineers' ability to begin repairs safely.
Boelo followed Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, which arrived on Friday. Together the two systems cut power to 838,700 properties across the country. Gusts peaked at 85mph in Machrihanish, Argyll and Bute, and 84mph in both Stornoway and Capel Curig. An amber wind warning remained in force until Sunday evening for much of Scotland and parts of northern England.
The human cost is the clearest measure of the weekend. A man is dead, and the outage figure is a snapshot taken while the storm was still active, not a final tally. The Energy Networks Association's number covers properties without power at one point on Sunday afternoon; it does not capture how many had already been reconnected, or how many will lose supply again if the next system arrives before repairs are finished.
That is the compounding problem. Neither storm was record-breaking on its own. But back-to-back named systems leave little time for power restoration, travel recovery, or tree clearance before the next low-pressure system moves in. More wet and potentially very windy weather was forecast for Monday and Tuesday, with another Atlantic low-pressure system expected. Whether that system will be strong enough to be named is not yet known.
Several questions remain open.
The pattern, not the peak, is what matters here. A single storm of this strength would be manageable. Two in three days, with a third possible, is a different test of the same infrastructure.
