Trabzonspor 1, Beşiktaş 0 — Ozan Tufan's 21st-Minute Strike Splits a Half Beşiktaş Controlled
Trabzonspor lead Beşiktaş 1-0 at half-time at Papara Park, and the scoreline is doing a lot of work against the run of play. Ozan Tufan scored the only goal in the 21st minute, a left-footed finish from open play worth 0.20 xG. It is the one moment Trabzonspor have converted from a half in which Beşiktaş held 59% of the ball, took 11 shots to Trabzonspor's seven, and generated 16 touches in the box to the home side's 10.
Beşiktaş set up in a 4-1-4-1, Trabzonspor in a 4-2-3-1, and the shapes tell the story of the half. Beşiktaş's single pivot screened the back four while the two banks of four pushed high, pinning Trabzonspor into their own half for long stretches. The visitors completed 205 passes at 85% accuracy and 118 of them came in Trabzonspor's half. Trabzonspor, by contrast, completed 133 passes at 81% and only 62 in Beşiktaş territory. The territorial ledger is lopsided. The scoreboard is not.
Chance Creation: Trabzonspor's Edge in Quality, Beşiktaş's Edge in Volume
The expected-goals numbers are closer than the shot count suggests. Trabzonspor generated 1.04 xG in the first half, Beşiktaş 0.83. Both sides created three big chances and one apiece from set plays — Beşiktaş's 0.03 xG from dead balls is the only set-play contribution either team managed. Trabzonspor's open-play xG of 1.04 is the decisive figure: they have been far more efficient with the ball they have had, and Ozan Tufan's goal is the clearest expression of that.
Ernest Muçi has been Beşiktaş's most dangerous outlet without reward. He has accumulated 0.59 xG on his own — more than half of his team's first-half total — and has yet to score. Aral Şimşir has added 0.06 xG, Leandro Trossard 0.10. Salih Özcan has been involved in the build-up without registering a shot of note. The pattern is familiar: Beşiktaş circulate, Muçi threatens, and the final touch does not arrive.
Trabzonspor's defensive work has been scrappy but effective. They have won 19 duels to Beşiktaş's 20, committed five fouls to Beşiktaş's six, and picked up one yellow card apiece. The home side have not tried to out-pass Beşiktaş; they have tried to survive them and strike on the break. It has worked once, and once is enough at the interval.
What the Second Half Needs
Beşiktaş have the territory, the passing volume, and the box entries. They do not have the goal. Trabzonspor have the goal and almost nothing else in the way of sustained control. The question for the second half is whether Beşiktaş's pressure eventually tells, or whether Trabzonspor's 4-2-3-1 can keep absorbing and countering. Muçi's 0.59 xG without a goal is the number Beşiktaş will be staring at in the dressing room. Trabzonspor will be staring at the scoreboard.
