Sevilla's Rebuild Still Lacks Caparrós Balance After Getafe Defeat

Sevilla's 3-1 loss at Getafe exposes the gap between their sixth-place position and the balanced squad of the 2017/18 Caparrós era.

Sevilla arrived at the Estadio Coliseum sixth in LaLiga, fresh from a home win over Osasuna, and left it with a 3-1 defeat to a Getafe side that had been winless in three league games. The result itself is one match. The question it raises is bigger: does Sevilla's current sixth-place return reflect a durable rebuild, or a squad still short of the balance that Joaquín Caparrós brought to the club in 2017/18?

The numbers from Sunday paint a curious picture. Sevilla had 53 per cent possession and 12 shots to Getafe's 11. Yet Getafe generated 1.58 expected goals to Sevilla's 0.73, and carved out two big chances to Sevilla's none. For a side with more of the ball and more attempts, Sevilla created remarkably little of genuine threat.

That gap between shot count and shot quality is the match in miniature. Sevilla's 0.73 xG here sits well below their average of 1.53 across earlier 2026/27 matches in all competitions. Their two corners were also below their earlier average of 4.2.

The Caparrós comparison

Under Caparrós in 2017/18, Sevilla took 2.5 points per game over four league matches — three wins and a draw. Under Luis García in 2026/27 so far, the return is 1.7 points per game over ten games: five wins, two draws, three defeats. The current side sits sixth, which is respectable.

Sevilla's recent results show the inconsistency: a 3-1 loss to Barcelona, a 3-3 draw at Levante, a 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid, a 2-0 win over Osasuna, a 3-0 Copa del Rey win at Sporting Hortaleza, and now this 3-1 loss at Getafe.

Turnover and its consequences

Sevilla's summer turnover was significant. Youssouf Fofana, Giorgi Kochorashvili, Arouna Sangante, Fran González, Lucas Stassin and Robbie Ure arrived. Djibril Sow, Alex Costa, Rafa Mir, Akor Adams, Oso and Juanlu Sánchez departed.

Sevilla had the ball but not the cutting edge. Getafe, by contrast, lined up 4-2-3-1 with David Soria in goal and Enes Ünal in the XI, and made their chances count. Getafe welcomed back Ünal and Orel Mangala, while Mario Martín and Johan Mojica were suspended.

Sevilla have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five matches against Getafe, which makes this defensive performance all the more jarring.
